    The Tichegami Odyssey

I dunno, that sounds pretty tasty... might not have made it back to the boat after breakfast. I'd set the over/under at 2 days.

Western Kentucky U wins 2026 concrete canoe competition

As Chip says, anything can float as long as the weight of the water displaced is greater than the weight of the object you're attempting to float. For that reason, there will (probably) never be a concrete yak competition. The decks would add a substantial amount of weight which would require a...

    First Canoe

I used a syringe (without the needle) from Tractor Supply for my 1st couple of builds (pretty easy to suck up some glue by tipping the bottle) but I've started using a small, rinsed-out Elmer's school glue bottle on the last couple. Seems to lay down a small bead & it's easily sealed when done...

Callan: Crowded Canoe Country Isn’t A Crisis

It's a double-edged sword for sure. The more people who know about an area, the more people will visit it and that can lead to more abuse or even losing the solitude that we once enjoyed. At the same time, those people will (hopefully) come to love the wild places and join in keeping them wild...

    First Canoe

I bend 3/16(ish) pieces when laminating seats and have never used heat. I have a piece of (3 or 4 inch) pvc pipe that is capped on one end. I place whatever needs bent inside, fill it with water, clamp a scrap inside to hold the strips underwater and soak them for 3-4 days. At that thickness...

    The Tichegami Odyssey

I don't remember seeing a tag-team trip report before... Very cool.

    First Canoe

Do as you like but I do not thicken the epoxy when I do it, I use it unthickened, brush to wet it and then dab it to kind of drag it into place. I try to get the first side to run past center & onto the far side of the hull and then overlap with the other side. It's usually not pretty (another...

    First Canoe

Once again, everyone is different & you'll find your own way. Personally, I don't seal coat anything (though I may try one someday) but, other than that, I do them as Jim does: wet out the "stems" last and tuck in as best you can. I do not use thickened epoxy and I use a cheap paint brush to...

Yes, alternating sides, interweaving the strips (I use a chainsaw file to cut the cove into the lower strip that runs past the stem) creates a box joint similar to what you've shown. I have no idea if it's as strong as inner & outer stems (I suspect not but I've never built anything but...

I think there are still many ways that you can reduce final weight. 4 oz glass will be lighter than 6 oz and s-glass is stronger than e-glass. I usually use 4 oz e-glass on the whole hull with an extra layer (also 4 oz) on the football (e-glass inside, s-glass outside) You can reduce further...

What Happens to a Lake When Its Dam is Removed

At least locally, those were splash dams that were broken periodically to wash the logs downstream in the resulting flood. I doubt that the amount of ecological damage that practice inflicted would be tolerated today. There have been some dams removed around here because they provided water...

    Tichegami / "Moon" route

Awesome trailer. I'll look forward to seeing the whole story.

    Bob Tailed,38 Spl.

Looks great (as always). Building stemless, did you reinforce the joint between the sides & the bob with anything other than a little extra glass?

    First Canoe

I think that depends upon how your canoe will be used. If you wet-foot on lakes and you're careful, e-glass is perfect. If you are planning wilderness trips that subject the canoe to scraping over rocks, dragging over beaver dams (and, perhaps, even portages), the s-glass should provide a...

    First Canoe

I'm always glad to see another builder online and I doubt that you'll regret the endeavor regardless of the final weight. Keep us updated on progress; I'm looking forward to following along.

    Corrugated Canoe

Use sandstone from the stream for a really interesting evening. (just kidding... don't)

Hmm... might also work as a stew pot.

    Boreas Ponds, Adirondacks, NY

I'm just pleased the pixelated photos weren't some "artistic license" experiment. Interesting effect but I'd hate for that to catch on... could trigger a migraine or anger issues. Hope you get it sorted.

Old Town Osprey trolling motor setup?

I can't advise you about lithium batteries (I use lead/acid in the bass boat) and it's been years since I mounted a trolling motor to a canoe (We-no-nah Jensen 18). IIRC that motor was about 16 lbs thrust and the canoe moved about 2-3x faster than I could paddle it. My aluminum bass boat moves...

Planes on grain runout in cedar strips

I prefer Save Edge if you can find them. Leave the handle off for fairing the hull & be gentle- they are extremely sharp and cut well with minimal pressure (farriers throw them away when you have to push down- that's when you start to vary from level)
