Right now, 4:44 pm.

Just last week, camping in the Adirondacks, I was cold at night in the mid-40s F because I hadn't brought any warm clothes.

Too hot,
too cold,
are the wages
of getting old.

Maybe I should move to San Diego, where it's always sunny and perfect room temperature. C'mon Powerball!

Or buy the first air conditioner of my life. Nah. Too complicated.

It's been a hot and humid summer here. It's finally breaking and we have a bit of respite for the foreseeable future.

I didn't have AC in the house until a couple years ago and boy am I glad I had it this year. I don't know how I used to sleep through those hot and muggy nights. Actually, I do remember, and it was not pleasant.

We have used our air conditioner more this year than any other time. Don't know how we got along without it. Started out this Spring with big plans around the cabin, but every time I try to get something done I can't work because it's too hot. We've been trying to get something done early in the morning and late in the day. Cooler weather coming this Thursday  For all the complaining I did last Winter I can't
believe I prefer the cooler weather to the Hot weather.

The heat and humidity back East really gets me down as I get older. I've never tripped in that kind of weather and don't think I want to. The closest I've come to it was probably the Everglades in March, and that was borderline too hot to sleep for me.

Since I've gotten back to Ak. a couple weeks ago it's only broke 70 degrees F twice. The 10 day forecast predicts highs only a couple days in the mid 60s with a couple not getting out of the 50's. Much nicer tripping weather unless you like to swim. I've only gone swimming 4 times up here in over 30 years and three of them were by accident.

For Spartanburg SC, we set a new record today: 39th consecutive days with the high over 90 degrees. The next couple days it should be in the mid-90s, so it looks like the new record will be 41 consecutive days. With the daily heat indexes reaching the upper 90s to upper 100s, it has not been very conducive to paddling.

Another trip to the Northlands sounds very tempting right now.

2:45 pm today, July 30 → Temp: 92° F (33° C). RealFeel: 109° F (43° C).

Don't even want to get out of bed where I have two fans focused on me to make it tolerable to sleep, much less to do anything outdoors. At night, we run an attic fan to suck cooler air into the attic. Been that way in two houses since 1982.

Never needed A/C when living in Malibu or San Jose, CA.

Did have it in Austin, TX, from 1977-79 where it was exactly 98° every day for the summer. Never 97° or 99°, only 98°. Worse heat climate than Florida where I lived three times and which has some breezes from ocean and somewhat cooling afternoon rains in summer.

My old house, which I'd built myself, was super insulated and stayed pretty cool until we'd get a long stretch of hot and humid weather. Inside the house would be a muggy 75 degrees and outside was a muggy 95 degrees. Normally I would just open all the windows every night to cool it back down and then shut them in the morning but that doesn't work when it's still 80+ degrees when you go to bed. It would just make the house worse.

Are there any forecast out there what weather you are expecting for this fall?

Right now, I'm planning the weather will be warm enough for me to continue tripping the Adirondacks well into October maybe even into early November. I expect dry weather with daytime highs 40-45F and night time lows 20-30F.

We'll see what kind of weatherman I am. I hope I'm mostly right, cause I sure haven't done much tripping this summer.

We had a short, violent thunderstorm here shortly after I posted today and the temperature dropped 20 degrees. How does that work? Magic? Whatever, it's a welcome relief and it actually motivated me to go out this evening.

Hmm... It's been hot here but it's been hot in July for the past 60+ years IIRC. I figure that I've no one to blame but myself; I had a whole year to move someplace cooler.

Maybe, as I get ready to retire, I'll buy a house in Ontario and one in Mississippi (Alabama? Louisiana?). I could park a canoe at each & hitchhike back & forth as the seasons change. That way, I won't even need a car, insurance or anything else. I can just be a hobo in transit.
