Bits and Pieces on the Allagash

Envious here. I had wanted to paddle the Allagash this year but an injury of my own, and my wife isn't well, so that spoils my plan! I can visit vicariously through your pictures. Thanks for posting.

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Like Keeled Over, I'm a cyclist. Fewer miles these days though after having T-boned a leaping whitetail deer a couple of years ago (on another bike). My current, and last, bike is a Seven Axiom titanium frame with Campagnolo Record drivetrain. My favorite bike ever! Oh yeah, does...

    Self Inflating Pads

I like the looks of this: https://www.nemoequipment.com/products/flyer-bluesign?srsltid=AfmBOoq_iN0EUgmMUYSrO_rKxunjf9wY3Yrv80IXpg3gA5rVE9XSEHeK I'm only 5'10" so the regular length is fine, but it's available in 25" width. I favor self inflating pads, and currently use a Thermarest Prolite...

    Wood Glue versus Epoxy

I have always used Titebond III for canoe repairs. In my case nothing I repair is ever submerged in water or exposed for long periods of time other than the laminated paddles I've made. Those may be immersed for many hours at a time during use. No failures to report ever! Current glue...

Fresh paint to the 16’ Chestnut Cruiser

That looks great Robin. I guess the Sikaflex stays somewhat flexible? Did you dry bend the outwales or steam the ends? I might try the Sikaflex idea on my current restoration project, a 15’ Old Town 50 pound canoe from 1938, though that’s a long way off. Just repairing many rib tips right...

    Photo of the day

Here's my guess on the 3 wood/canvas and 1 stripper: Foreground to rearmost: 12' Penn Yan Hunter, Chestnut Bobs Special, Chestnut Pal, and a stripper- maybe a Jacks Special.

Single sided correction strokes - Does your paddle touch the hull?

Okay... so what kind of canoe? Man-made materials? Aluminum gunwales? With tongue firmly in cheek... my first response is the occasional gunwale bump in my wood/canvas canoes isn't very upsetting. The noise- what little there is- doesn't transmit to the hull with a booming sound like it...

    Hello from Vermont

Welcome 802. I believe that’s Mt. Carmel in the distance seen from Chittenden Reservoir. I’ve spent many pleasant hours there on the reservoir, often “dinner cruises” where we paddle out to a likely shoreline, swim and enjoy the lake, cook dinner over a fire, then paddle home at sunset...

What do you use to rustproof your wood stove in the off season?

Wow, didn’t know that! When it’s gone I guess I’ll use the Briwax.

What do you use to rustproof your wood stove in the off season?

Hey Robin, my shop tools (bandsaw, table saw, jointer) have cast iron tops. They are all located in my unheated barn, and with the humidity we get here in Pennsylvania, I periodically do a light sanding and an application of Johnson's paste wax (makes 'em nice and slippery for pushing wood)...

    97° F (36° C), 108° F (42° C) RealFeel, in NW Connecticut

Oh, you can't leave us with that teaser Al. Hopefully each time involved a tender canoe, a fully attired paddler, and a crowd of amused onlookers ashore!

    97° F (36° C), 108° F (42° C) RealFeel, in NW Connecticut

Yep, brutal here today in southeast PA too. I tried to do some canoe work in the barn and in spite of being out of the sun, the heat was too much.

    What Crooked Knife?

I briefly had this desire to make one. I got as far as collecting some Osage Orange crooks (crooked branch segments), and an old straight razor of my Grandad's thinking I could make one. I got distracted with other things, like building & restoring more canoes, but maybe one day I'll continue...

How is this for camp food

dang, I don't eat that well at home, let alone out by the fire...

Can you side sleep in a hammock?

One can sleep in any position with this hammock/tent. The mat is held tight by force multiplying climbing strength webbing, and is quite stable and taut. The tent is capable of being used on the ground as a 'normal' tent if there are no trees around. One downside is that I don't think anyone...
