Mesmerizing/Interesting Phenomena & Experiences Without An Eclipse

"furled, folded and then fanned".... nice alliteration!

Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

The Opeongo Aerial hammock is quite comfortable. The slackline type suspension results in a drum-tight, flat lay. I find it quite comfortable. I would not recommend it for anyone much over my height of 5'10" unless you don't mind having head or feet touching the netting fabric. I found when...

Glenn, my friend suggests that the nitric acid process works well on cherry and walnut also. After seeing his process I find that Pennsylvania long gun makers use a similar process for curly maple which apparently is favored for gunstocks. However, the process used there includes the...

    My First Paddle

What a great result! Very nice and shapely paddle. Can’t go wrong with cherry.

Thanks everyone for following and commenting. Rick, I must admit this is my first exposure to the process. There is no stain involved. Simply the application of the nitric acid solution, application of heat to oxidize the acid, light sanding, wipe with denatured alcohol then oil. I watched...

Update: I finished the paddle; my first curly maple. I'm very happy with the weight and feel, though undecided about the grip. I usually like a grip which has a 'notch' for my thumb to curl into and this grip is a bit simpler. Time will tell... I am very fortunate to have a friend who has...

I have also set up my 10'x12' tarp (A frame style) over my Opeongo Aerial 1 hammock. The hammock is quite comfortable, and with it's net tent makes a great, airy setup in warm weather. It allows plenty of air flow and the net tent makes bug season tolerable. Seen here in my back yard. And...

Yes, it’s a first generation X Mid 1person. Since i don’t carry trekking poles while canoeing I made some 48” segmented fiberglass poles from an old tent. For those unfamiliar with the XMid tents, they are designed to use adjustable trekking poles for support. I love the tent!

Nearly always as an A frame. I often set the tarp over, or partially over my tent to create a 'porch', or protected entry. Here, on site 12 St. Regis Lake, ADKs prior to a predicted heavy downpour.

I have never had a truly lightweight paddle, so I don't really obsess over weight. That said, various maple species are similar in weight to cherry, and I have several cherry paddles with which I am content. This paddle will be 60"which seems to be right for me. I made a 58" paddle and I...

Too cold to paint my w/c project, so I'll make the first paddle with the new (1952 vintage- same as me) bandsaw added to the shop. I'm making a curly Maple, single board paddle. My own grip and blade design. I usually use another paddle as a starting point and then alter to suit my curiosity...

Any plans for the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse?

Yes, I am hoping to be on Fish Pond in the St. Regis Canoe Area, ADKs, NY on the 8th. I generally prefer to be there on weekdays only in order to avoid crowds, but in this case I will likely enter the area on Saturday in order to be in place by the Monday event. Judging by the included website...

"Drag-ability" of hull material over rocks in river beds and on portages

I gotta chime in here. I only dragged it once ( I swear- only once), in desperation, and only on boggy and soft terrain- not a rock in sight. Not on a portage. Just to escape the bog of upper Harrington Brook between Lake Lila and Clear Pond (Whitney Wilderness, ADKs) when I navigated poorly...

2/19-21/24 Big Pond Catskills NY (+ hearing aid discussion)

Oticon More 1. They are rechargeable, and the charger stores power for several charges even when not plugged in. I wear an older battery powered pair when paddling over several days.... it's hard to find a charging receptacle out in the woods! I do want to hear the owls... and bears (oh my!)...
