    GRB Newman Design

My GRB is my most used paddle, used it for several years of open canoe downriver whitewater racing, tough as nails and very light. My ZRE's are a bit lighter but not as durable. Even when using the ZRE the GRB is always in the boat.

    Solo Daytripper SOF build

SOF Canoe, similar to a geodesic aeriolite. 12 1/2' and 13lbs. Actually about 14 1/2 with seat backrest painter ready to paddle. Heat shrink dacron epoxy finish with carbon dust in it, thought it might be able to slip over rocks logs etc. Seems to work ok, did put a hole in it once going...

Tales of favorite canoeing or travelling vehicles

Saab Sonnett, 1972. Little 2 seater sports car, roof racks were 16" apart. Front wheel drive before that was common, 16" wheels and 36 MPG just in time for the oil crises. Put an average of 28,000mile per year on that car. Lived in Washington DC, Mass and NY and traveled to races all up and...

Scary and it could happen in a canoe around cottage country.

Just yesterday had a close call on Upper St Regis here in the Adks. Coming back from the St Regis Canoe Area, just at dusk, to the put in I had to cross in front of a private marina. 2 motor boats pull into the marina, one docks up the other heads back out, puts it in full throttle right at...

    T-Shirts Revisited

If you make another run I will get an XL. It's not surprising that XL went first, Americans being big people in general to begin with, we are mostly older here and prefer the "relaxed" fit. I work in retail and we always sell out of XL first and have small left at the end of arun and we...

How far have you paddled in one day???

Paddled the Connecticut River from South Pittsburg NH to Long Island Sound in 9 days a couple years ago. Total distance 386 miles, first day was only 8 miles, had to drive from home in CT to near the Canadian border to start the trip. It's not like your moving so fast in a canoe that you can't...

    Adirondack Trip

I did Little Tupper Inlet/Wanakena a few years ago. As I recall it was 68 miles and about 8 miles of portages in 5 days, but that was pushing it. 10 days would leave plenty of time for hiking, and lots of good fishing along the way. And Packbasket is a great place to set up your shuttle, a...

    Your best (favorite?) paddling partner...

My son, been paddling with him since he was about 6 months old, he's 25 and still gets out with Dad once and a while. When I was young it was my little brother, I did the General Clinton Canoe Regatta with him on his 16'th birthday back in 1972. Hadn't paddled with him in a good 40 years, but...

Poll: How many paddles do you own?

Wow, you have some old blades, I too have an OLD Illiad, and an old laminated wood Mitchell WW paddle. I also have 3 ZRE bent shafts (one is my sons, but it's here at the house), a GRB carbon bent, a Barton which was probably the first (at least successful) carbon Bent, an old Al Camp wood bent...

Poll: How many guns do you own?

I'm in the 12+ category, same as my canoes and kayaks and for the same reason, there all different and all a pleasure to use. I hunt, I used to shoot competitively. I have very few of what would be called modern guns, almost all are over 50 years old and a few over 100 years old, 4...

Upper Saranac to Green Pond Carry?

Oh Yes , and enjoy the St Regis Canoe Area

Upper Saranac to Green Pond Carry?

The area where your red rectangle is between Back Bay and Green Pond is private. Officially, you would take out at the state boat ramp and carry to the Green pond carry off Rt. 30 which is across from the road to the right just below your red rectangle. You'd be walking through someone's yard...

Poll: What percent of the time do you use a double blade paddle solo?

I have a specific canoe I built just for double paddle . It is a narrower canoe with a lot of tumblehoam, boat seat mounted on the bottom (about 4" high), I only use a double blade paddle in that boat, it's the boat in the photo to the left actually, that was taken on a carry into Preston Ponds...
