I learned about these when I had to travel for work. If you like espresso and dark chocolate you will like these! Readily available through Amazon. Not a substitute for real coffee but on the other hand one of these will definitely take me another mile or two upstream.

I have been using single serving "Top Roast" liquid coffee capsules. Not bad(although I'm not fussy) and no grounds to pack out.

Looks like fun to me. Ages ago, someone gave me chocolate covered roasted coffee beans. Those were fun too.

I'm not that into chocolate, but Mrs. Claus found my sweet spot. Ha ha (ho ho).

Those chocolate covered coffee beans are trouble. In a good way.

We've collected some of those VIA coffee packets from Starbucks but haven't tried them yet. Hot chocolate powder often comes along on a trip so a caffè mocha shouldn't be too hard to brew. But not as handy as an espresso in my pocket. I'll look out for those, thanks Grumpus.

Hmm one in your pocket for a portage! Turtle it's candy.. not coffee.

Probably not good for FL canoeing.. :(
Each piece has the same amount of caffeine as 1/3 of a shot of espresso. Currently not made or sold in summer but they are working on a summer version. They are popular in Italy and Italians take their coffee pretty seriously.

I buy those VIA packets in bulk from Costco. They go with me any time I leave the pavement for more than an afternoon. Pretty good (much better than other instants I've tried), and they leave little trash to carry out.

Gumpus - I have a weakness for anything that puts dark chocolate with dark coffee. Thanks!

Found something I like better than VIA. Was given a Mount Hagen's instant coffee sample on a trail work party and really liked it. Last canoe trip I was on I Canada, I passed some out to campers and they are were impressed with the taste. Not bitter like most and handy when one or two cups of coffee are desired. For a treat I sometimes add a packet of hot chocolate. Hard to fine in stores but Amazon keeps me stocked up.

I'll pass on the Starbucks products, moral objection, but that's a different topic.

We use to carry a press, grounds and all the stuff necessary to make coffee in camp. I got tired of the hassle and extra stuff required and went ultra simple. Now we just use instant coffee or espresso mixed with hot cocoa mix, instant mocha, just add hot water. We make pre-measured bags with 1, 2 or 3 scoops of coffee and a bag of cocoa mix, using super basic sandwich bags if backpacking, they pack down great. If we're in the truck we just drop a container of coffee and a box of cocoa in the food tote.

Back to the original post, I've been looking for these (Pocket Coffee) for awhile but forgot what they were called. Somebody gave me some years ago, ate most of them but forgot some in a backpack. When I found them during a hike some years later, the liquid center had partially crystalized into a truffle-like consistency; it was amazingly good.

Via is OK as instant coffee goes (which is a low bar), but nowadays my camping coffee is made from fresh ground coffee in a #2 (1 cup) Melitta filter in a collapsible holder.

My Brother-in-Law gave me an AeroPress for Christmas as dozen years ago. I use it at home and in the backwoods; its very portable and makes a great cup off coffee.

The Aeropress is THE ticket for quality coffee in the sticks. Heck, I use mine every morning at the house with an electric kettle. It offers so much control over brewing, if you want to fiddle, and is stupid simple to operate and clean.

Aeropress GO for the woods and the Original for the homestead.

That said, I did just order a jar of the Mount Hagen stuff recommended upthread.

Not a fan of the bars and such, I just prefer to drink my caffeine.

I typically detest instant coffee but, at 50 cents a cup, I may give the Mount Hagan's a try (strictly as backup, I'm still taking my percolator). I'm also surprised that Amazon's margin is so low. You can buy it direct and save (literally) a dollar but you'd have to buy $50 of it to get the free shipping.

(As memaquay recently stated in another thread, this site really excels at separating us from any spare cash that we might have)
