I have met many people in my canoeing endeavors. Not all have become close friends. But like stars in the sky they are people who will guide should I need them . I know they are there. One passed away yesterday and this I am sure has happened to you too. Or will happen. We can bluster and opine and agree and get angry but in the end all is the same.

I treasure and miss all my canoeing friends and acquaintances that have passed on. All have had wisdom to share. May I share with you some from Jean's obituary? She was a quiet compassionate paddler and I am so glad she was awarded the Quiet Water Society's Verlen Kruger Award in 2014

Here is her favorite quote and wish

""For the Monarch, that [life] cycle is measured in a known span of months. For ourselves, the measure is something else, the span of which we cannot know. But the thought is the same: when that intangible cycle has run its course it is a natural and no unhappy thing that a life comes to an end."

You can honor Jean's memory by sitting in a quiet spot in nature, free of distractions and let it speak to you

Please share any thoughts and favorite quotes you might have.

A bumper sticker I found when undergoing cancer therapy. "Tough times don't last-tough canoers do!".

We all remember the wise water rat: "Believe me, my young friend, there's nothing- absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats."

"My boat always starts; the motor dies when I do." Me in response to a novice motor boater.

Mahatma Ghandi when asked what he thought of Western Civilization:

"I think it is a wonderful idea."

Not all those who wander, are lost.

I think its a Tolkein quote. I have a leather patch with that saying on one of my canoe packs :)

Two short quotes I keep on my office wall.

“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work” (Thomas Edison)

“When they get your balls, and your smile, they’ve gotten too much” (Father Daniel Berrigan)

Ppine, my favorite Gandhi quote, also on my office wall, is his revision of the seven deadly sins:

Wealth without work
Pleasure without conscience
Knowledge without character
Commerce without morality
Science without humanity
Worship without sacrifice
Politics without principle

I’m not especially worshipful, but I’m in agreement on the other six.

Am I suffering from depression or are things really that bad?

Yes. Said my friend while upside down in a kayak in a 30 knot wind on the New Meadows River yesterday. We got him out somehow. I believe there may have been a part one of his quote which I can't print here.

"Judging all in all, life would have been so much simpler if father had worn a condom."

"Children are smarter than any of us. Know how I know that? I don't know one child with a full time job and children."

Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what the heck happened.

No love so hot that marriage can't cool it.

Three moves are as good as a fire.

Never trust a man your dog doesn't like. (it helps if the dog isn't all that friendly.)
