Not exactly paddling specific but these were all used a lot when out on trips:

And my own all time favorite, and more in the paddling arena..."there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." as quoted by Ratty in The Wind in the Willows.

Unfortunately, a very small percentage of people get the reference to the movie and the rest think I'm an idiot.
