Go have a look

Crazy stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Were you a member here a few years ago when member Uncle_Skwid did the Grand Canyon solo and unsupported in an open canoe? If I remember correctly he ran everything and dumped once.

He lost his helmet and gopro on the trip and a few months later they were found and returned, giving us a little video:

Too bad he drifted away from the site. Every once in a while I look to see if the book ever came about but haven't seen anything.

I don't remember if it was covered in either of those threads but his beloved boat was stolen long before the trip and he got a replacement but wasn't as comfortable with it. Only a week or so before the trip his stolen boat was found and returned and made the trip.

I see nothing about a Grand Canyon canoe video at that link. Maybe it's because I'm not eligible for membership in the Facebook cult. One of the many things I don't really understand.

However, thousands of open canoeists have run the Grand Canyon, beginning with Jim Shelander of Georgia (later, California) in a Mad River Explorer in 1979. Later, in the 80's, Bob Foote and Nolan Whitesell, among others, led many open canoe group trips on the river, including small sexagenarian women from my club.

In tripping canoes loaded with all the food and gear needed for the 20 some days of the trip, no raft support either? I would be surprised, but surprise me!

Since I can't see the article or video you linked, I have no idea what kind of trip it was.

The open canoe group trips in the 80's and 90's I'm familiar with were raft supported with all the paddlers in solo open canoes, not tandem tripping canoes. However, I've read articles and seen several videos since over the past 30 years of paddlers running without raft support in open canoes, sea kayaks and whitewater kayaks. I've known several people, of at least high intermediate skills, who've paddled the Grand Canyon and most say it's not that technically difficult if you can get over the psychological fears.

Is there a direct link to this video?

I bought a Dagger Dimension from a guy who ran it through the canyon solo.

I have always sort of enjoyed this short video of a guy running Lava Falls in an 11 1/2" Mohawk Viper open canoe:

Sorry I tried t get a direct link but just doesn't seam to exist. The trip in the video is just that a bunch of paddler running grand canyon in fully loaded tripping canoe for over 20 days self supported! Lots and lots and lots of open boater did the trip but I don't know any that didn't have raft support if they were in tripping canoe and in tripping canoe I include dagger dimension and the like!!
