Here's a story that popped up recently about a couple of cross-country travellers getting caught by freeze up.

These two are exploring The TransCanada Trail that crosses Canada. I happen to live next to a hike/bike section of it.
Sections of water trail are necessary to connect thru wide expanses where hiking trails would be impractical (as yet) to build. Besides, these water routes among others are also historical. I'm enjoying armchair travels looking through these maps and info, hope you do too. Additionally there are links to interesting canoe blogs made along the water trail.
