A married couple team paddler friend of mine have a GRB Monarch with wood gunwales that they race and apparently like very much. I was in the market to get a nicely performing stable boat for my daughter a few years ago and I knew that my good friend Brian at Mac's Canoe Livery had one like it for sale. So when Brian was not home the day I went to his livery, his wife Grace (also a good friend) took me with a load of boats to try them on a nearby pond, I did not care much for that GRB Monarch, as it seemed to sit too low for me, was not as responsive as I wished, and it had those wood gunwales. I don't think it would have been the right boat for my daughter. with where she had to store it. But soon Brian soon showed up at the pond with a Wenonah Outfitter model Monarch for me to try. I liked it much better for how it responded and it sat higher, plus it had aluminum gunwales. So that is the one I bought from Mac.

Not the same Monarch. The Monarch Alan brought up is the expedition solo by Mad River, used/designed by Steve Landick. Verlen Kruger used the similar Sawyer Loon.

Maybe they should call it a "Kruger Monarch" or "Savage River Monarch" to differentiate it from the "GRB Monarch" . How many Monarchs can one follow?
I had a Mad River Monarch. Wonderful boat, I just didn't paddle enough big water trips to justify keeping it.

I guess there always be less monarch canoes compared to prospectors, explorers ,quetico's to name a few. It is good to see this hull back in production.

The gbr monarch is one underrated shape. That not many people put in their shortlist. It is so good

This is exciting! Ive never seen a Savage River build, but if their quality is reflective of their pricing it will definitely be a looker. The MR Monarch is my favourite boat in my fleet. It would be nice if they’d offer an expedition model that’s a little more heavy duty like the Seawind, and for sure it needs “Kruger” somewhere in its branding.

The savage rivers i have seen are close to the best composite canoes I have seen, if there was a ' easy' route to buy one in europe i think i had one. I thikn there are less then 10 over herewith a range of designs. The ones that interrest me most , the marc ornstein designs never made it . As far as i know.

Info on this hull is somewhat sparse. What is it's primary purpose? Big lake/sea expeditions? High volume rivers? Do-everything?

I've read a lot of threads and reviews, and it looks like 90% of the people that own them are doing basic rec tripping with them.

If you would like to see what it was designed for, look up "Verlen Kruger" and his paddling over 100,000 miles in his lifetime even though he did not start paddling until he was 41 years old!

That is some awesome milage, some incredible trips and why he designed the canoe.
