I have recently acquired a used composite carbon hull Savage River Saranac C4 canoe outfitted for racing. It had obviously been stored outdoors for a time, as it had a white chalky oxidation on the exterior. I buffed and polished it with a quality buffing compound and restored the original surface to charcoal black. It has a couple of small patches, which seem to have been expertly applied and are smooth and flush with the original surface. The only real annoyance is where the previous owner had paddler's names stuck to the hull with tape. After removal of the stuck-on names, the names remain visible in original deep carbon black in contrast to the somewhat lighter charcoal black of the buffed hull. I do not believe there is any way to fix this, short of black tape strips or further oxidation which I will not allow to happen with indoor storage.

I have removed all four seats, including the side-side sliding seats #2 and #3, cleaned and lubricated them with silicone lubricant and reinstalled them along with adjustable new foot loop webbing.

I called Ben Diller to ask him his further recommendations. He said I need to get a good quality auto or marine clear coat applied, but did not recommend any particular brand or exact procedure. Has anyone done this or can recommend a brand and the exact process? Thank you.

I assume the preferred method would be application via HVLP spray gun, like an automotive clearcoat over paint. You can get a quote from your local autobody shop.

You can also DIY the project via harbor freight tooling or rattle cans. A C4 will take a LOT of cans. A Harbor Freight air sprayer kit will probably set you back $100ish and give you a way better finish. Lots of YouTube on spraying good-enough clearcoats.
