Puget Sound Ferry Rescues Capsized Canoeists

If that is what they were wearing they are not very smart. The temp of Puget Sound is 55 degrees in summer. Lots of open water, ships and big waves. It is marginal for open canoes without a spray skirt, experience and dry suits. Glad they made it.

We lost 8 people last Sat on Lake in a powerboat capsize. It was a 27 foot Chris Craft hit by a microburst from a thunder storm. The water temp was 58 degrees and the weather was windy with light snow on June 21. Two people survived.

The satellite maps show no less than a 0.8 mile crossing, and nearly two miles in most. That is no place for goofing around. They got lucky and help was nearby.

Hopefully they learn and don't make the same mistakes in the wilderness. Unfortunately blaming the new canoe and lack of bailing scope is not a good start.

Years back I raced the Cross Sound race from Alki Point to Bainbridge Island, about a 4 mile crossing. We were in a Wenonah SCR, decked with plastic, friends (who beat us) were in a decked Wenonah 18 Jensen. It's rather interesting paddling race boats in such big water, dodging ferries. We did have safety boats though.

I have paddled the San Juan Islands only once. We started in Anacortes. We paddled past ships in the harbor, The tidal range generated over 3 foot tidal rips in the channels. We paddled around Cypress and Guemes Islands, but elected not to cross Haro Strait. Too much fetch, too many ships, and too many barges hauled by tugs on long cable. We wore wet suits and were in sea kayaks with skirts.
