I'm off to the Allagash next week, but really didn't have the right boat. My Mohawk Whitewater 16 is a barge, and I wasn't sure that I wanted to paddle my composite Spirit II down Chase Rapids, or drag it through the shallows that we will probable hit next week. Fortunately, we were able to borrow this Penobscot 17 from a friend.

Inherited the seats from my father and never used them before, but they look like they belong in this boat. Plenty of room under the seats to kneel for the run through Chase Rapids, and enough room to actually bring the kitchen sink. ;)

Borrowing canoes can cause some problems.
Dragging someone's else's boat through shallows instead of taking your own canoe?
Be prepared to come up with some compensation.
It can ruin friendships.

I had a Penobscot 17 for quite a while back in the early 2000's (2001-2011 if my memory is correct). Did some class 1-2 southern Appalachian waters in it, but mostly used it for lake paddling. I ran it on the rivers without bags and remember that it was a bear to handle once it filled with water!

We will be doing mostly lakes. There is one short class II section - Chase Rapids - that gets water from Churchill Dam. The ranger will shuttle the gear for $10 so you can run it empty. There are a few quickwater sections below that, but they will be low unless they get some more rain. We'll see - off tomorrow.
