I am the owner of a new Wenonah Escape in ultralight construction.

Among other things , this means it has tubular aluminum thwarts. On my other boats I ran shock cord through the wooden thwarts to hold little stuff like maps in place.

I’m a little iffy on the idea of drilling holes in the aluminum thwarts, and the aluminum would probably wear on the shock cord pretty quickly.

How does everyone else deal with this? Thanks in advance.

Bungee balls.

I haven't ever drilled through thwarts, though most all are made of wood or infused foam.

Some use cable ties and carabiner items to the cable ties. While both the above might slide a little, in a solo they don't get out of hand. You can also use double sided velcro that comes in long lengths.

Years ago, when I had/rented a canoe with aluminum thwarts, I suggested taking along several key hole-shaped shower curtain rings to fasten map cases, etc. to the thwarts. No weakening of the structure; easy to remove.
