The "big bad wolf" is a myth borne of the overlapping of human/wolf territories, and the killing of livestock, not people.

That certainly seems to be the case in North America but when I looked up worldwide wolf attacks I was surprised at the numbers. If I recall there were something like 600 deaths per year, by wolf, in India.

I have seen those stats, too... You would think that the much larger North American wolf ( they get bigger the farther north you go: Bergman's Law) would behave in a similar manner, but they don't. Separate evolutionary branches over thousands of years?

Might any extirpation of prey species have a role to play in this? vis a vis the diminished carrying capacity of different locations.

I think that makes the most sense...Tigers kill hundreds of people in India every year, as well....
