After a year or more of looking at the Traveler, a boat I knew I wouldn't paddle much I put it up for free. Today Goonstroke showed up and after an bit o' time we got 5 thwarts in it as the gunwales were gone an he took off back to his place in Maine. We had a good chat and I wished him luck on the rebuild and am looking forward to seeing how he overcomes the sheerline problem with the boat. One of the nicest guys I've met! Chris, I hope the boat held up well for the ride and look forward to a write up of what you do to it. Glad to see it go to a good home.

A few pics of Chris cobjobby thwarts together for the long haul home! Christ the things we do to get a new/used hull! Of course I am not guilty of this at all........

She arrived alive and intact! 200+ miles sans gunwhales. Nothing came loose and there were no more than the usual jello-wiggles. (Heck, tupperware boats wiggle like that even when fully outfitted.) Those slotted PVC pipes Doug cut were key, I'm going to take a few pictures in the morning light.

Thanks Doug!

How were those temporary thwarts attached to the hull?
Mostly wood screws, through the hull from the outside and into the end grain. Since the boat has had (at least) a couple sets of screwed wooden gunwhales there were a lot of holes to choose from, so we only needed to drill a few new ones.

I always Applaud a safe journey! Especially when traveling Highways with canoes. Often times more Treacherous than class II rapids !

Congratulations !

From the "getting there is half the fun" department, here are a few more pix of the cartop scheme.

Those PVC pipe segments with slots cut in them are the key detail.

Note how temp thwarts/spacers are between the pipes on the inside. With the gunwhale brackets adjusted to be snug the boat is held tight, at least at that point.

I fiddled a lot with the bow ropes. I wanted it tight so the bow wouldn't move side to side, but if I cinched either one too much the hull would start to fold between 2nd and 3rd temp thwarts.

Here's the boat off the car with all temporary bracing showing. The 1x3 temporary thwarts were screwed in, while the fence lathe spacers between the PVC pipes were just taped in, but held tight between the gunwhale brackets. (Should I spend more time raking leaves and less time messing with boats? Bah!)

In any case, this scheme was Interstate grade, just barely, on a day with light wind and not much truck traffic. YMMV!
