I hope I’m in the right place here. I want to build a skin on frame tripping canoe for lake and modest river (up to class 2 water). I’ve built several cedar strip boats but not for this particular use. I built a Geodesic Aerolite snowshoe explorer which is described as perfect for my intended use, but I’m not at all happy with it. Well, I’m happy with the weight...

I have the plans from Northwest canoes for the Northwest Passage Solo, and was thinking of trying that as a SOF build. (I’d omit the tumble home for SOF).Alternately, my wife wants a lightweight day paddler. Another boat, not the solo tripper. Something else to think about. Maybe a Bobs special? Or a 15’ prospector?

so I’m asking the local brain trust: any ideas for designs that paddle really well and can be built as a skin on frame canoe?

I can't say I have any experience in SOF builds !

But I've eyeballed this guys builds for awhile, and they look pretty tempting.

I like the idea, and I'm thinking, it wouldn't take as long to build as a stripper. Oh and the weight !

I am concerned about the durability of them though.

Check this guy out.

The Cape Falcon guy definitely makes some nice boats. But he has a unique construction method that I’m not ready to try. There’s a guy in Ontario https://www.backcountrycustomcanoes.ca/ that builds beautiful canoes. He has videos of running kind of aggressive fast water in his SOF canoe. But I think he only sells completed boats.

i think they’re more durable than most folks think. And if I were to plan BWCA or Algonquin trip, it just seems ideal.
