Sorry for derailing the other knife post. Another thing I do with sheath knives is to modify or make the sheath to lye horizontal-parallel to the belt instead of the conventional vertical. . May sound silly, but there's way less chance of injury and it doesn't hit things when you sit down. You can either wear it in front or the rear--the side doesn't work well.

Regarding knives and the fickleness of life. An acquaintance of a coworker was separating frozen hamburger patties with a knife when it slipped and cut his femoral artery. He bled to death before EMTs arrived.

There are two groups of people that should carry knife at the ready that can be accessed with one hand. That would include boaters, especially canoeists, and people that work around horses.
A while ago I splurged and bought a nice Benchmade folder made in Oregon. I went for the one hand action and found a spring loaded blade. Very easy to open with a good locking mechanism. Then to my horror, I discovered that the knife actually opened and locked in my front pocket! Dangerous in the extreme. To fall on it could mean severe injury and even death a long way from help.

I mention this as a cautionary tale. The company was not very sympathetic. They offered to sell me another knife at 20% off. Needless to say I no longer carry the knife in my pocket, but only in a scabbard.

When paddling I have a rescue knife attached to my off, that knife is only use in rescue situations, it is a high quality Spyderco sheep foot serrated really sharp blade that is the best rescue knife I’ve found so far!! It lives in a custom made kydex sheath!! And what on trips I have a small pocket knife for small tasks and a sheath knife for bigger task like field dressing games! And an axe always an axe!!
As for the horizontal carry they are ok but I find them always in the way when sitting in vehicles and if you wear it in the front sometime digging in when sitting unless they are really small knives...

Using a belt dangler on a fixed slot sheath knife allows it to pivot out of the way when you sit.

Yes, most sheaths put the hilt too high for me. I wand to pivot the whole thing when I sit and keep it from under my packs.
