Kidney Pond, Baxter State Park, Maine

I just spent 3 nights at a cabin on Kidney Pond in Baxter State Park, Maine. I spent many hours drinking tea on the front porch, flailing my fly rod for elusive brook trout and just plain doing what I do at home these days, taking it easy.
Kidney Pond is a beautiful spot, just not big enough to consider it a real paddling destination. It was easy to see everything in a couple of hours of slow paddling.
The cabin was nice with a wood stove to take the chill off and a view of the pond.
This was my first time in a rented cabin and I did enjoy it, hopefully my next one will have more opportunities to explore with my canoe.

Looks nice and relaxing, just spent 5 days on a houseboat on the Mississippi with my brother - did a lot of the same, relaxing and drinking a lot of coffee.

That cabin is even bigger than my 6-person tent. Old age base camp canoeing conveniences.

I recall going to Kidney Pond as a boy with my grandparents. Probably just to look at it or maybe fish it. My grandfather was a fisherman. Can you see Katahdin from there? When we traveled around Maine we always stayed in cabins. I suppose motels existed, but it was always cabins.

I'm glad to hear that it went well and I too hope that your next adventure offers more paddling opportunities.

I haven't tried cabin camping yet though I've often thought it would be a great way to sit out a heavy snow storm. (maybe too early in the year to think of such things)

Thanks, I was happy to learn after my lay off that I can still paddle that 14’ Chestnut pretty much all day without tiring out, getting out at the end had its own issues.

Well, climbing out onto a dock is always a bit sketchy IMO and certainly not what you've become accustomed to on trips. Probably something you'll get better at with practice.

I really like that little Fox! Glad you're finding ways to get out there and enjoy the water. I'm going to try to build one of those 14 footers.... anticipating the day when it's hard to carry a big canoe!

put my 17'6" Atkinson Traveler in the water for the first time yesterday. It wasn't too bad carrying it once on my shoulders, but doing the 'flip' up onto my shoulders was a little dicey. Fortunately there weren't too many people around to see if I had failed!
