Ice Fishing with Stone Age Tools

There's a show called Alone: The Skills Challenge, in which participants attempt to complete bushcraft builds using only basic tools and the natural resources around them.

You need to catch fish to eat from a hard frozen lake in mid-winter with stone age tools. No metal augur, axe, shovel, hammer or chisels. How do you make a hole and catch fish? The ground is frozen, too, with lots of snow cover. No bugs or worms to be seen.
 
I'm not sure how practical it would be to melt a hole in the ice with fire but, depending on the thickness of the ice, that would be my first thought.
And then, if possible, I'd attempt to cover the large hole with some sort of structure which would make it dark inside and hopefully slow down the re-freezing of the hole. Then I'd attempt to spear the fish that are hopefully lured in with bait.
