Fisheating Creek Info
This is one of the best paddling sites in Florida, in my opinion. The creek winds its way through several different ecosystems, marshes, cypress swamps, lakes. It is changing all the time which provides interest. You will easily see turkeys, hogs, deer, raccoon, alligators, turtles, and in season Swallow-tailed Kites.
Kayaks do this as a day trip. From Burnt Bridge, I like to stretch it into two nights. You camp wherever you can find a suitable spot, which will change with the water level.
It has been relatively unknown until recently. I was surprised to find information about it on the internet, so I suppose more people will be traveling on it now.
It is protected by the Fisheating Creek Settlement Agreement and access is only through the Outfitter, which can change as it is a state contract. There is a free access near Hwy 27 but this gets you near the "bottom" of the creek. You would have to have enough water to paddle upstream, or a bit of a ways downstream.
Fisheating Creek is the ONLY free-running river left running into Lake Okeechobee. Be sure to check the water level before you go.
