Considering we now have many of us who build or restore w/c canoes, I have a question for you all who make your own filler. We use the Old Town updated recipe as such...

Reprinted from Wooden Canoe #16 (no lead)
o 43 ounces boiled linseed oil
o 21 ounces mineral spirits
o 34 ounces enamel paint
o 2 ounces Japan drier
o 6 1/4 pounds 300 grit silica
o 2 ounces spar varnish

The only variation is our sand is 340 grit, what they call silica flour.

My question is, what is the purpose of the linseed oil? If it is for just mold and mildew, I can remove it since we treat the canvas after we stretch it on the boat. For whatever reason, whenever I make a batch using this method it comes out really soupy and I throw out more than I use. We are almost at the point on the present build to canvas and fill, so, if you don't mind sharing, I would appreciate perhaps another recipe to use this time around.

Thank you
Karin
