    Camping with no tent, hammock

Only issue is that it doesn't really have the bug protection, it is made for colder weather, but it is great for the hammock. I have one, it is called the CozShack https://camping.onetigris.com/collections/tents-shelter/products/onetigris-oozshack-hot-tent

    Hood strap failure

This may be one area where there is some crossover to some of the hammock materials I use frequently. When making weight bearing hems, the thickness/strength of the webbing is important, here are a few items that may be interesting for this purpose. My favourite webbing, is also the thinnest...

Thoughts on double bladed paddles from a somewhat experienced double blader.

I don't think I missed the point, I think my words didn't maybe convey what I was trying to say, as well as I would like. "Dancing around a dock" ... the intent was to say, when I need finesse and close quarter control, I reach for the single blade ... realize now that it could be construed as...

Thoughts on double bladed paddles from a somewhat experienced double blader.

You see the subject of somebody getting/building their first canoe and the long list of wants for this "do everything" canoe that just doesn't/can't exist ... if it did we would just have that canoe, no others would be needed. Same idea with paddles, they are tools to get the job done, I don't...

Just to expand a bit, I suspect a lot of the technical industries use metric, even in the US

Having worked in a lab all my life, but also having grown up with Imperial, I find my life an odd mix of both. I have found some plans in metric and TBH and converted them to imperial to build.

It might also be that the USA is the only place that actually still uses Imperial, lol

That length fit chart is definitely not easy to notice, but it is where you pointed. "How long is long enough?" will always be a contentious issue IMO and that chart seems to be about 20 - 30 cm shy of where my groups experience suggests the optimum length for touring lies. At the end of the...

    A Raven from Scratch

Since gunnel joints are end grain joints, I would suggest those 45 joints should be quite a bit longer ... just thinking out loud. I like using epoxy anywhere I use a saw cut, because of what you said, it has void filling capabilities and keeps the joint strength even with a few defects. The...

Thoughts on double bladed paddles from a somewhat experienced double blader.

Personal opinion, take with a grain of salt .... My Freedom Solo has a 26" gunnel width and my original Grey Owl Tempest was 250 cm ... that worked OK, but after using that for awhile I felt a 260 cm might be better, so I made a 260 cm version and it fit me better, drier, easier stroke, more...

Thoughts on double bladed paddles from a somewhat experienced double blader.

I do believe you need to fit the paddle to the paddler/situation and you can make almost any paddle work, but that doesn't make it it "fitted" or optimum. The whole point of the longer, low angle canoe paddler ( IMO ) is mostly for gunnel clearance for the low angle stroke. If you want to use a...

I guessing you missed the thread a few months ago on DBs, this may get interesting .... again. I started using a DB with my Freedom Solo from Bear Mountain back in 2014, a custom 250 cm, low angle from Grey Owl paddles. This boat is a bit narrower than your Encounter, but I still found the...

    Poll: Wood Strip Material Choice

My first few canoes were WRC and it is a good choice, it works and finishes easy ... if you have the option to inspect, it also comes in a range of colours from tan to chocolate brown. It can be a bit of a chore to find a source of suitable wood, but that is part of the journey of strip building...

    Canoe Weight Calculator

Don't get me wrong, the calculator is very innovative and does allow a reasonable estimate of finished weight. Weight is a product of both materials and usage technique, so there is a range for the final weight. This calculator does tend to be at the very high end of the expected range of...

Misc Ramblings From the 'ole Miss(inaibi)

That is something that most folk don't consider about an extraction, you go, the gear stays. When I got injured and had to be extracted, I got lucky and had folks to hump my gear out .... otherwise it would have stayed put until I got healed likely. Nice report

Can you side sleep in a hammock?

There are hammock "Hangs" quite frequently, Google MAHHA and HANGCONs and you should find enough to get the idea of what a hang is, you could go there and look around and talk to the folks about the various types/setups etc, there are vendors and DIYers and people there to have a good time. You...

Can you side sleep in a hammock?

Whether you pick a "Gathered End" style or a "Bridge" style, you can lay flat and side sleep. In the gathered end style, you lay in a diagonal position and the hammock creates a trough, creating a long flat lay for sleeping or lounging. The sides do tend to rise above the body and block the...

    That nasty cracked Wenonah Moccasin

If you are going to glass, as a repair ... going with a lighter glass will save some weight , both in glass and epoxy and likely not impact repair strength at all. The lighter glass will be easier to flair as well.
