Contact info on paddles and gear

We (read, my wife) mark our gear is various ways. 'Stuff' happens on long, big water trips, from crashed boats to simply leaving gear in the last camp.

    What are you reading?

I read quite a bit this winter, but just finished up a book called 'White Cargo' and it had quite an effect on me. Not a cheery, fun read, actually rather depressing...

Last gear purchase(s) that made a real difference?

The wife and I updated our bike/back/canoe tripping tent, sleeping bags and sleeping pads to ultralight offerings. Light and compact is always a good thing, our old gear wasn't terrible but it was definitely more MT oriented and less AZ. I'm having these Wee Lassie urges, I've had a great time...

    Classic sheath knife ideas

'Condor' offers several classic knife designs in the $40ish range in high carbon steel and wood. Thier 'Nessmuk' rendition would make a good general purpose outdoor knife IMO and they have several bushcraft styles. Deciding on gift knives for budding outdoorsmen is a good problem to have :- )

Soloing America's Big Ditch: Open Canoe Style

Don't sell yourself short Mike :- ) Most folks drawing permits for the GC aren't SW boaters, a goodly percentile aren't even rafters per se' and outfit everything including the chow and do just fine. I've done trips with folks in that group and have had a great time. Even if folks are rafters...

Soloing America's Big Ditch: Open Canoe Style

I don't know about perks or if they rotate in and out, frankly I've never quizzed any of them up about it. I know it would not be a job for me haha By the time folks get to Lee's a lot of water has already passed under the bridge, along with time, money, emotions of all kinds and a whole soup...

Soloing America's Big Ditch: Open Canoe Style

I surely agree on summer peak season at the Ferry, no doubt chaotic for rangerettes fashionably attired in body armor, Sam Brown Batman belt, complete with Glock, Tazor and flex cuffs for a party of 16 in 100° plus weather :- ) Honesty though, just about the time I'm ready to go full metal...

Soloing America's Big Ditch: Open Canoe Style

It's always interesting to get folks reactions to their first trip :- ) It's sorta like sex, much anticipated and studied in advance and then many of the finer points are lost in the excitement of your first time haha ......I was kinda suprised you decided to swim Hance, there's a good dry run...

    Custom printed maps

I use mytopo quite a bit, for both dry and wet operations :- )

    Paddling Lake Powell?

My wife brought this article to my attention when it first came out :- ) She was ready to pack the cat rig for a month long Mexican Hat to Lee's Ferry run with a lot of side hikes haha You have to wonder what the river bed would look like and how much sediment would be in the side canyons of...

    SUP Tripping: Realistic or Ridiculous?

I haven't PBed yet :- ) I had my chance at Mexican Hat boat landing on the San Juan last year. A group came in view while I was guarding the flotilla, while some of our crew ran up the hill for a beer and ice refuel :- ) It was a interesting view, it looked like fit young woman in bikinis...

    worthless cell phones

I appreciate smarty pants phones for all the reasons stated :- ) ....but most of all for the ability to share random pictures and thoughts in real time. My friends and family are always firing off pics of various outdoor pursuits, gardens, pets, kids, weather effects, stuck vehicles, you name...

Versatility of a tandems as a solo

I went back and forth on this for three months before I bought back into canoeing haha and here recently a hardly used, stored inside, 15' Wenonah Prospector in green RX came up on the local market in the $500ish range with 2 Grey Owl paddles. Hopefully it sells fast so I don't have to muse...

    Some Arizona Flyfishing

There's a lot of AZ folks that find good sport warm water fly fishing :- ) I've never done it myself, but getting on a small large mouth bass lake and working the gaps in the weed beds sounds like fun. I have fly fished small mouth bass on rivers and it was a good time working crawfish...

Padding on cross bars for canoe?

I carry my canoe on multiple vehicles, crewcab pick-up, Jeep Wrangler and my wifes Jeep Cherokee. Foam blocks work good on all of them. The kit I use has rope with steel 'S' rings that work good with all the bumpers on our vehicle. I bind the canoe down with 'trucker' knots. We run some really...

Picked up my Headwaters Canoe! Pic heavy post.

    Congrats, that's a fine boat :- )

    The 'Easy Rider' Decked Boat

Looks pretty similar to me, three holes and a deck haha If anything it doesn't appear as beamy and has less rocker...maybe, it's hard to tell from a pic :- )

    NRG: Sometime Season

Hammock on the GC is no bueno' for the most part. The wife and I put our two Paco's under the floor of our free standing tent, makes the mattress, protects the tent floor and keeps it up off the wet ground. Speaking of tents, those that have a lot of bug net in the tent body with a fly over it...
