Thanks for the tips, Mike. I, too, like the idea of a channel between the two halves. Brilliant idea.

    Adhesives

Good point, Canotrouge. G-Flex can get expensive. I know contact cement doesn't let go of knee pads easily, so I know it will work. I think the problem is with the user (me) not the product used.

    Adhesives

Thanks for the tips. Maybe a combination of using G-Flex as suggested by dougd along with the excellent advice of having extra hands on deck an taping the area off with blue tape as suggested by Mike is the way to go. Mike - thanks for the thought about leaving a drainage channel down the...

    Adhesives

Hi All, I know this topic has been covered in detail in several post (great bunch of information), but the one question I'm looking for an answer to doesn't seem to be there. Some help would be appreciated. I'm re-outfitting a RX boat and want to tear out the glued-in kneeling pad etc...All...

boat advice: solo canoe for 1-2 week river trips?

Regarding the Wilderness and oil canning... I haven't noticed oil canning in mine either...it's a 2008. Seat placement on the other hand was a challenge. I kneel almost exclusively, except when I have the need to stretch my legs. Original seat placement was poor for sitting and horrible for...

boat advice: solo canoe for 1-2 week river trips?

The OP is in North Carolina. There are plenty of Wenonah dealers there. Old Town dealers, too.

boat advice: solo canoe for 1-2 week river trips?

Charlie Wilson mentioned the Wenonah Wilderness. I agree, it doesn't have much rocker, but for your physical size, it is worth considering, I think. It has taken me a few years to finally figure out how to paddle it well, but now that I have it figured out, it is a reasonably maneuverable...

Versatility of a tandems as a solo

I have to agree. I have a dedicated solo and a tandem, but even when soloing, the tandem is my preferred boat. If I had to pick only 1 canoe, it would probably be a ~16ft symmetrical tandem. Fifteen footers are too small for a tandem (to my liking, anyway) and 17 footers are starting to get...

Robin, Thanks for sharing your painting tips. The boat looks fantastic.

    Restored Bell Northstar

Robin, That paint job looks great. Would you mind sharing the steps you followed in painting that canoe? And what type of paint did you use? Thanks in advance.

    Tie-downs for Transport

Cam straps about 1/3 way in from the stems, load stops, bow lines to hoops that come from under my hood, stern lines to the frame under my rear bumper. If carrying two boats, both boats get the same treatment and just for the heck of it, a single rope over both bellies with a trucker's hitch to...

    canoe fishing gear

Canotrogue - Nice pike for a first one. These slime machines are a blast on a fly rod. I'd like to see you deal with one on your Tenkara outfit!

    canoe fishing gear

Robin, There are many quality and affordable options. Performance of fly rods peaks out way before the price does. So you don't need to spend a fortune. However, the bottom rung fly rods will frustrate you and turn you off from the sport. A line of rods that I recommend all the time are the...

    canoe fishing gear

To help with line management, i was thinking of making something like Cliff Jacobson's "trampoline style" tumpline. Maybe, maybe not use it as a tumpline, but when flyfishing, have it in front of me sorta like a canvas table. Here's a picture of his trampoline tumpline...

    canoe fishing gear

Occasionally I will drift with wets like that...usually when I'm tired and just want to kick back. Sometimes on deeper lakes, though, I will do a pile cast with a woolly bugger on the end, and let it sink as I drift along

    canoe fishing gear

I flyfish out of my canoes all the time. I've fished for everything from panfish, bass, pike, trout, and salmon out of them. So I bring whatever gear I need for the fish I am targeting. I usually have 2 rods with me when I flyfish (out of a canoe or not) one rigged for casting drys and the...

    Knives and other bladed tools

JagDaddy, I agree, puukko knives are great. I like how they work and I like how they feel in my hand. The Helle knives, are excellent knives. And not very expensive either. Plus you don't feel like Rambo wearing one... I've never worn a neck knife, or worn a puukko that way, but you aren't...

    Tarp size

Thanks everybody for your input. Gave me more to think about. Yellowcanoe put it well that you can make a big tarp smaller, but not the other way around. Mike, thanks for helping me appreciate bat wing shaped tarps. Plenty to consider..

    Knives and other bladed tools

DaveO - that's an interesting looking knife. Looks like it's made specifically for batoning (and obviously hacking). Maybe not the right one for wrestling with black bears, though. Still picturing Alan's story of someone killing a black bear with a 6 in blade. I'd rather not try!
