My first cedar strip canoe build -- 17' Kooteny (was Micmac)

Finally getting back to my canoe project after almost two years without much progress. I've been working on the bouyancy tanks and am just about ready to glue them in. I've noticed canoe manufactures include some means for pressure to be released from the tanks. Does anyone here have a method...

    Carbon / Kevlar BLACK Pearl

The last time I went to Canoecopia about three years ago there was a presentation about a group who built a pair of tripping canoes and used Catalpa for the strips. I've been keeping my eyes open for some ever since to maybe use for an accent strip. Where did you find it? I believe their...

    Barrens build

Hi Alan, I take it that Sadie is an integral part of the balance of your design, and therefore could not also try out Jim's canoe with you. I don't know if you have tried poling much, but I would be very interested to know how the Barrens performs as a poling platform. I have successfully...

My first cedar strip canoe build -- 17' Kooteny (was Micmac)

Thanks for the advice everyone. I did not make a lot of progress last weekend - I only had one day to work on it and it was spent filling and sanding the inside before fiber glassing. Hopefully I will be able to fiberglass the inside this coming weekend. What is the consensus on fill coats on...

My first cedar strip canoe build -- 17' Kooteny (was Micmac)

More progress. Took a week off to take a vacation with the family for spring break. I'm just about done sanding the inside. Thanks for the tips regarding the interface pad on the ROS and also the pool noodle sanding block. One question: when doing the "final" sanding on the outside of the...

More pictures from fiberglassing this weekend. Another question: can anyone recommend a non-shedding chip brush?

My first cedar strip canoe build -- 17' Kooteny (was Micmac)

Filling the weave question: I glassed the hull this weekend and put the second fill coat on this morning. Should I continue to apply fill coats until the weave is completely gone? Or should I let the epoxy cure and sand some before putting on additional coats? Thanks for any advice, Bernard

My first cedar strip canoe build -- 17' Kooteny (was Micmac)

No Title Here is the progress as of yesterday. I think that I filled staple holes and cracks too soon. When I did the finish sanding I opened quite a few back up and need to go back and refill. I tried several fillers and ended up liking Elmers Ultra thickened with wood flour the best. The...

    NWC Cruiser build

Hi Sven, I'm almost to this point with my build and plan to glass next weekend. Just curious if you wetted out both layers (partial and full) of the glass at the same time? Did this cause the resin starvation on the bottom that you mentioned? Thanks, Bernard

Does anyone have any experience or opinions about the UV inhibitor epoxy? Any reason not to use it? I plan to varnish for UV protection, so this would be an example wearing a belt and suspenders

Or even worse, turn into bookshelves. The Wisconsin Canoe Museum is offering a class in wood canvas canoe building that I'm tempted by: http://www.wisconsincanoeheritagemuseum.org Unfortunately my vacation time is pretty much all planned. Maybe next year. Bernard

My first cedar strip canoe build -- 17' Kooteny (was Micmac)

Here is the progress from the weekend: Question: Bear Mountain in the book Canoecraft recommends cutting down the center line with a chisel. I am tempted to use my Japanese pull saw. What have more experienced builders done? Thank you, Bernard

Getting ready for football this weekend...and I am not talking about the Super Bowl! Question for the more experienced builders: when I started laying strips, I was carefully wiping away glue squeeze out with a wet rag, but stopped when I read in one of my books that this made it more...

My first cedar strip canoe build -- 17' Kooteny (was Micmac)

It was designed by Bruce Kunz Here is the set up that I am finally happy with for scarfing the strips. I had built this scarfing jig for a previous project to make stringers. I got the idea from Dave Gentry's website. I was having a problem getting a nice cut with the thinner strip stock...

My first cedar strip canoe build -- 17' Kooteny (was Micmac)

Thanks for your observations Jim Dodd and Stripperguy. I actually started out setting up the stem forms adjacent to the end forms , but later noticed that the plans specified a distance from the centerline. I just went out to the shed and double checked the overall length and am confident that...

Progress this week. I'm currently struggling to come up with a system to cut scarf joints that I'm happy with. Wishing I'd bought longer boards to start with. Bernard
