    PFD For Dogs?

I've never taking a dog in a canoe, but have in a small sailboat. She always wore a PFD. Standard Poodles are water dogs, but with all the hair, that can weigh them down making swimming harder. Also getting them back in the boat is easier with a PFD on. Just my two cents.

I found that the trailer is only rated for speeds of 62mph or less. I verified this will Discount Tire.

Experience with Yakima Trailer for Canoe Transport

Thanks Wanderer, I'll go with your advice for the Sportsrig. I like the idea of Aluminum but if something breaks, its easier to get steel welded over aluminum.

Experience with Yakima Trailer for Canoe Transport

Thanks everybody for your input. I was getting a little frustrated trying to find a trailer with tires big enough to withstand 70 mph highway speeds. Seems like the 8 inch tires are only good up to 62mph and have read articles that the small tires will fail. I'm going to compare the Yakima...

Experience with Yakima Trailer for Canoe Transport

My newer car can't use a roof rack but does have a trailer hitch. A lot of trailers out there but most are limited to 55 mph. I've looked at Yakima Rack and Roll but was told it was too light especially with a very light canoe and would be pushed around by semis. Also the canoe sits fairly...

    Hello from Jackson Michigan

Thanks devils son in law. Since this is my first boat, I'm still learning a lot about canoeing sticking to the smaller lakes. It will be a while before I venture into the rivers although looking at some smaller lakes in and around Grayling that are surrounding by State land. thanks again alan

    Hello from Jackson Michigan

Just started canoeing but been reading this forum and books to catch up. Spent last month in upstate New York picking up my new used Kestrel and the drive home was uneventful thank you much. I plan on checking out and fishing small lakes around home too small or remote for the bigger boats. I...

    Hemlock Canoe Works Website

I really liked the Peregrine but my blue Kestrel is a better fit for my size. She really scoots.

    Pack Boats Single Blade Paddling???

I've been looking at the Hemlock Nessmuk or the Nessmuk xl. Can these be paddled with a single paddle verses the normal recommendation of a double? How would the boat respond? alan

Solo Canoe - Length Verses Hull Speed

I'd like to thank you all for your guidance. I have paddled both the Kestrel and Peregrine and found the Kestrel to be for me: definitely quicker, faster, but a little 'twitchyer' which will go with experience with the canoe. I finely received the roof rack and planning to pick up my Kestrel...

Solo Canoe - Length Verses Hull Speed

Thanks Turtle, that's what I thought. My only concern is if (and I said if) I ever going solo tripping, my total weight (154 + stuff) would be near the high end of the capacity efficiency range of the Kestrel.

Solo Canoe - Length Verses Hull Speed

The manufacturer for both canoes is the same that being Dave Curtis (Kestrel and Peregrine).

Solo Canoe - Length Verses Hull Speed

With sailboats, the longer the wetted hull, the faster the boat. Does this equate with canoes? That is, if two canoes both with the same weight but one is 12 inches longer and 1 inch wider, would the longer slightly wider boat be faster with a given (but old) paddler? Would you need to be...
