    Quetico Impossibilities 2026

The Remote Area Border Crossing permit is officially kaput until September, at least. Unless the powers that be set up “Call-In” border crossing stations (whatever that means), this essentially cuts off American access to the southern Quetico park entry points. I had a pretty neat plan B trip...

So, what did you buy on Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

I got a 60L blue barrel and harness. Weighs much less than the CCS food pack and bear vaults. I guess my new canoe was Black Friday too. Got my better half a new Apple Watch and a car. Still considering an InReach3. It will cost about 1/2 the price of a new device to replace the battery I'm...

    Namekagon Encounter

Great for a family trip. Plenty of takeouts depending on the tolerance of children. My grandchildren are addicted to devices, so 2 hours was their limit before becoming annoying. We ended up doing 3.😂 Sorry about the unmentionables.

Turtle Flambeau Flowage , my pup Max ‘s first trip … success!!

Is it crowded and noisy during the summer?

    My Paddling Partner is Recovering

It’s going to be a looong recovery for Bogan after TPLO (ACL) surgery on his left rear knee. I put a ramp off the porch, a pen in the house so the other dogs won’t interfere with his convalescence. He’s pretty drugged up, but will soon begin therapy. I had to create a spreadsheet for tracking...

    Missinaibi River

Keeled Over, Maybe we should hook up for an old guy trip someday. How far north do I’d you make it?

Does canoeing northern areas reduce the luster of the southern areas?

I understand the feeling. The crowded industrial commercialism of BWCA and even Quetico are buzz killers. However, the trees and topography around the lakes are the best in canoe country. The far north is boreal, marshy, less features. I like seeing the deciduous trees around the lakes. If...

    Wabakimi info

But there is no station in Armstrong, and getting clarification from a call center is wasted time. Like you say, too high a risk.

    Wabakimi info

Get the planning map, learn the railroad rules. I’ve been planning for a couple years. There are trips you can do from Armstrong, but you might as well do Quetico IMO. If you want to see the rivers and other features that make it unique, gotta take the train. (Although heading north from...

    New River Tripper

I’m portage adverse. My lake boats even wear these for lining narrows. The P15 is got rivers…and it’s 60 lbs!

    New River Tripper

Cause that’s a good way to dump a load.

    Anyone Use This Type Shelter?

What kind of net shelter do you use? I think that was from a Big Salmon River video. They were pretty professional, had a drone along.

    ACR Resqlink+ PLB

Yes, my IPhone will satellite SOS message, but not waterproof. I guess turning a device on wouldn’t be a hardship in an emergency, no more than releasing the antenna, positioning and initiating a signal with the PLB. I do like not paying a subscription, though. At $40/year, it’s still cheaper...

    ACR Resqlink+ PLB

Just spoke to the service center about sending my PLB to them for service. It’s been 7 years. It will cost roughly $300 to get this accomplished. That’s crazy, it’s a 12 year old piece of equipment! So I’m in the market for something new, that actually works. Saw the InReach Mini2 at REI...

    Anyone Done The Allanwater?

Kahel, Saw two of the three. Got a WW technical report? 😉 Just learned my dog can’t ride the train June-September. I might be going truly solo. It will break my heart to leave him. I’ll have to make it up to the old boy. He’s having ACL surgery next week. 8 weeks in a cage, on a leash.

    Help me pick a tandem

A few days ago, Rutabaga had an Esquif Prospecteur 15, which could be ideal for you, on sale for $1899. It’s a T-formex hull (60#). I’d hurry though. It’s still there. Great hull for tandem or solo. I’ve had 3 prospectors, 2 15-footers. If you’re larger people, a 16’ might be best with a dog.

    Overcoming Fear of Whitewater

Well that’s reassuring 😂. What about a solo wilderness trip with lots of WW? Would you attempt?

    Anyone Done The Allanwater?

I’d love to hear impressions about the Allanwater River between the RR and Wabakimi Lake, if anyone here has experience. I have the maps, trip reports (which are tough to correlate), and it seems a viable route, but first hand experience is always helpful. YouTube videos are interesting but...
