What's happening in your shop this winter?

Brad, I think a length limit for concealed carry makes much more sense than the mechanics of opening a pocket knife. I mean really, what difference crime wise does it make if a knife opens one second faster, or with one hand instead of two. IMO switch blade laws are hysterical emotional BS. That...

What's happening in your shop this winter?

In the winter of 2015-2016 I did a knife build that Robin raffled off for a fund raiser. Along the way we had poles to pick handle wood, blade finish, bolster material, and to name it. It ended up being named The Ripster. Memaquay was the winner. For those who were not members yet here is the...

What's happening in your shop this winter?

My knives are tools for cutting chores. Some of my tools are prettier than others. Here is my first automatic knife. I gave it to my son for Christmas. I'm about halfway through my third one now.

What's happening in your shop this winter?

I guess I've become kind of a lurker the last couple years or so. I just haven't had much "canoe tripping" to share. As some of the Old Timers here know, in the winter I retreat to my basement workshop and build knives from scratch. This year I have the automatic knife (read switchblade) bug. I...

Wood Harvesting Tools - Saws, Axes and Knives

I'm 61 and other than lower back pain, I'm in average shape for my age. My trips consist of solo trips to the BWCA in the Spring or Fall . I paddle a tandem from the bow seat and bring enough gear to be comfortable ( I double port). I sleep in a hammock and cook on a Coleman single burner...

Quetico Solo trip ... sort of. ( Pic heavy)

Nice trip Bob. At age 60, with mixed emotions, I find myself slowing down and smelling the roses. I find that I feel I have less urge to prove something and more urge to be nice to me.

Mem, we had allot of fun in that Ripster thread. I hope the Ripster has met your standards for a sheath knife.

I'm happy for you Robin, this change should give you more personal time and less head aches / worries. Thanks for all you have done. Doug Thanks for stepping up and taking this weight off of Robin's shoulders.

    axe sheet..

I glue the leather pieces together with contact cement first. Then I use a small drill bit and drill holes to be stitched. Makes sewing much easier.

    Lows Lake deer camp 2017

On my trip this Fall I struggled between feeling like I needed to prove something and enjoying my vacation. It feels strange to have to make adjustments but I guess that's part of life too. With me it has been all or none in the past. I'm finding out there is some pleasant middle ground. Glad...

What's happening to the price of wood canoes?

I had no idea. I guess I don't get out much. I got a pair of LLBean Boots About 30 years ago and wore them hunting for about twenty years. It wasn't a thing then. My USA made Carhart coat lasted about as long. I bought another to replace it but I don't think I'll be able to wear this one out...

What's happening to the price of wood canoes?

Just to clarify, I still will plan a few trips. I have gave up on planning the results. The last few have become more leisure. Get to a spot, set up camp and vegetate. I used to be more focused on proving something or measuring up. Not so much anymore. I'm so happy to see Alan take these...

What's happening to the price of wood canoes?

I'm coming up on sixty this year. While that's not old and I'm still somewhat active, I see the writing on the wall from here. Many things are going away as us boomers dwindle in number. I have built many things over the years with my own two hands, and have had the satisfaction in using...
