    Winter training.

Interesting... Not that I'm likely to build one (I'm more of the "drink beer all winter, get outta shape and suffer in the Spring" variety of paddler) but is there any way that you can get some pictures of the contraption? (I'm a big sucker for DIY and creative problem solving)

Thanks. Getting dropped in the dark wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me (I'd just sit tight close to the launch until dawn) but it's better that I'll be able to watch the scenery on the way to the drop point. Incidentally, that change must really complicate pick-up if the plan is to flag down...

Did the train schedule change since 2017? I've seen other reports of being dropped off in the middle of the night but the schedule says it leaves Armstrong around 9 am & arrives in Savant Lake (my nearest scheduled stop if I jump ship at Chivelston) around 2 hours later. I know the rail...

Does canoeing northern areas reduce the luster of the southern areas?

I've now done a couple of trips North and hope to do quite a few more. Having gone South as far as South Carolina, I am also looking forward to seeing more there too. Getting away from people seems to be much easier North of the border but spending the winter prowling swamps is very...

    South Louisiana

Welcome. It sounds like you might need to DIY one and start a stripper. Cypress might make a decent Cedar substitute if you want to remain budget-friendly.

    Humorous outdoor situations or events

I DO love a good yard sale.

    What's your best dehydrated meal?

Have you ever tried canned? IME, chicken re-hydrates best if it's been canned. I can a variety of meats at home (saves freezer space as well as cooking time) and the canned chicken, in particular, shreds easily when it's time to dehydrate. I've dehydrated white chicken chili which had cubed...

Do what you want but I'll agree with this 100%.

Interesting. I've never done a fillet on the tumblehome and don't worry about keeping the stems neat because I hide all of the mess inside float tanks. I like the way you've done it but I doubt that I have that kind of patience.

Sounds like a really great winter mem. Enjoy.

Looks great. I'm curious about what you taped off in the first pic and why.

    Wabakimi info

Outstanding that FOW publishes contact info for Jonah & Clem. I contacted both to be sure that it was OK to share publicly but, if FOW already lists it, that will suffice IMO. (Don, of course, is easily contacted through his website which I've already linked above. I would think that Don...

I haven't been there yet but don't see any reason that it wouldn't be possible to spend a summer out there. Friends of Wabakimi has maps, campsite and portage info and Paddleplanner has the same info (as in: literally the same info- I'm pretty sure most of the mapping was done by FOW...

    La Verendrye - Nicobyzard

Thanks for taking the time to post such an enjoyable TR. I understand the reluctance to return to daily life a little too well and have my doubts that a longer, more punishing trip will make the transition more palatable. By all means, however, test the theory and let us know. As for the...

Sorry, I can't help but operation seems normal to me.

    Overcoming Fear of Whitewater

All of my big ww experience was back in High School and I was paddling rafts or yaks on the Cheat or the Yough rivers locally. Now that I'm solo tripping in areas where the consequences for failure are far higher, I've looked into lessons but haven't been able to make arrangements (yet)...

Seems almost like overkill to me. Honestly, as stated above, I think you'll be fine but you have to be comfortable with the layup or you'll be timid about taking it on backcountry trips (where it's longing to go). I think you'll be shocked how much stiffer it is with the inside glass but...

    Aluminum or Galvanized Canoe Trailer?

Even if the trailer is too heavy to lift, you can always get a trailer dolly. With pneumatic tires, they roll pretty easily and can even handle small, packed gravel. I used one from Harbor Freight for years to move my bass boat and it was far too heavy for me to lift the hitch of that trailer.

    Camera Recommendation

There are certainly better options but I've gotten some pretty good pictures with Nikon Coolpix B500s. I don't typically max out the zoom when taking long-range shots but keep it to around 75-80% and then zoom digitally to crop/edit. Doing that, I'm able to read a license plate at around a...

    Old Paddle ID request.

It does look similar to the Dean boats and I guess that high, peaked deck would shed waves pretty well. Probably not a racing boat though as the rear deck would act like a sail. Maybe something like the Torpedo on pg 6 but the floor is much different & front and rear decks are more...
