What do you drink on a trip?

I carry a qt. Water jar with me all day, on water or not. The hands down easiest way to flavor the water is with a good sprig of Mint. We grow Chocolate mint so it’s what we use. Add a 4-5 inch sprig to a qt. Of water and it will flavor the water for several days! In our water; i’ll fill that...

Very little “serious” about my endeavors! The solo upgrade will happen but probably next winter, it’s not even here yet but this winter looks pretty full already. i want to do some homework and have a seat and some sort of foot support here before i start. I’m completely flexible regarding gear...

Doug, if you scroll back to #62 there are a couple good pictures of that set up. Bear in mind, im a machinist with machine tools which adds appreciably to the user friendliness of any finished product. The transducer is mounted to a driveway delineator via a stainless bolt affixed to the rod...

I certainly appreciate the concern for my well being and have to admit the sand bag is laziness on my part. I’ll have to round up a suitable “bag” for next season, or proceed with the solo conversion.

After settling in with the new boat i no longer consider it twitchy but rather appreciate the light weight attributes. Along the way i purchased a double blade carbon paddle and couldn't be happier with the up-graded performance. Most of the negative press on these was just that; i now travel...

    NRS Hydroksin.

Used with a pair of Seal skins (or similar) and a good water shoe, these are my new wader! As lite as a flannel shirt, comfortable fit and plenty affordable. I’ll wear my Piragas as an over-pant and have much greater mobility And a lot less weight to drag thru a stream. At 72, a few hours in...

    Badger Paddles, two thumbs up.

I‘ve had a chance to use those 4 carbon paddles i built last winter, two are a yawn and quickly gifted, one is a keeper and for dip-ship work (off road/ 4wheel drive stuff) that carbon paddle surprised me. BUT when working with my parade boat the Sassafras otter-tail is my favorite. You guys...

    Evolution of an Alaskan DipShip

It took 4 days to get the limit of Red Salmon (35) but they were fun filled days and i got to mentor a young family along the way.(detailed elsewhere) All the previous mods to the Discovery were very acceptable but as always (in my world) there will be a few tweeks for next year. My chain anchor...

Helping some young people out dip net fishing

During todays opener i caught 9 Reds and my cadets caught 13. It was a slow day fish wise but we’ve still got plenty of time to finish up. It was a blue bird day and im guessing 600 people showed up. The cadets used 2 of the 4 carbon paddles i made last winter and i think i’ll just consider them...

    What "is" a Canoe?

What is a canoe? To me canoe is a four letter word. ‘Tool”! That was pretty simple.

Helping some young people out dip net fishing

After scrubbing out the slit i blew it dry with air. On the outside a herking skid plate was used to seal the worn thru area and i didn't disturb that so all the prep was from the inside. A shop light was suspended above the repair for warmth and it stayed until the G-flex wasn't sticky any...

Helping some young people out dip net fishing

As some of you know, we are moving into dip-net season. Some of you saw my offerings while outfitting my own “dip ship”; and now i have a young family who are excited about the prospect of putting up a bunch of red’s and i‘m getting to mentor them along the way. I knew a lady with an old Coleman...

    Evolution of an Alaskan DipShip

We’re getting close to dipping season, as long as the escapement is high enough they’ll open it in the next couple weeks. Today i took the dip ship for a spin around the block on the transport cart. It’s not going to be a cake walk loaded; but manageable. Tomorrow i’ll go down to the stream and...

It’s taken a while but thanks to you guys; im on my way! I’ve had this new boat out previously but this outing was meant to more fully evaluate what i’ve got going here; so wearing my Piragus britches, Chota shoe‘s and Sealskins i‘m sure i really impressed the Loons. For this little outing i...

Anyone that can share a opinion on this object?

It could pass for a duck boat in Marshy regions. I don’t see anything that would frighten me or make me shy about completing this project. Then become familiar with it’s attributes and enjoy it.

    Lining holes

I used carbon fiber tube, and on the inside just wrapped the tube with carbon tow up against the inner hull on both sides and wet it out with epoxy. No leak, super strong. I may have a picture, I’ll have to look.

    Maine Moose Hunting Guide

Nice looking Moose Robin! Reading thru this i don't see any mention of antler size? Up here we have cow tags (very few) and bulls have to meet certain size/point’s to be legal. We have “any bull”, spike/fork, 50 inch or wider, 3 brow tine, 4 brow tine etc. depending where you hunt all these...

Kneeling at the yoke by far and with the smaller paddle. The two on the right were used this morning and the Sassafras otter tale was my favorite with just me in the boat. The other one was just too much of a good thing.

With the garden taking all my time momentarily the new boat remained dry till this morning. The ice just went out on Knik lake a couple days ago and it’s a ten minute drive so i left home about 6:45 and had a nice first paddle with this boat. Empty it’s lively but it gave me a chance to try two...
