    Kite build

Yes on the fillet. It's in the instructions for building that type of tumblehome. I originally had a pedestal seat but changed to a hung seat cause I like to kneel half the time. I'm nowhere near 240#, but i can't see needing any extra reinforcement.

    Kite build

I agree. Glassing and fill coats around that knuckle were more difficult. Make sure and round off that edge since the glass won’t lay down if it’s sharp. Mark

Freighter: 6ft waves safe and dry, cruise speed 30 mph in flats, minimum load cap 1500 lb

Roughly 15 years ago I made a few annual trips to Baffin Island to install and maintain weather stations in the vicinity of Clyde River. The Inuit of Clyde River use these Nor-west freighters on the ocean, and routinely travel between the village and their hunting/fishing camps during the short...

Big kevlar canoe repairs and new (to me) bias cut peel ply

Bias cut peel ply.........not! I took a close look and here's a picture of the weave. I tried to get a piece to form around a canoe stem, and even though it goes a little ways, it's not as good as cutting peel ply on the bias. Having said that, this stuff conforms great to the minor features...

Big kevlar canoe repairs and new (to me) bias cut peel ply

I assume it's bias woven because of how it behaves. I had no idea until I put it on the next patch, it was then I realized it would just conform to the ribs and foam core. I was quite excited at the time, whooping and hollering. I was initially concerned because the new peel ply seemed a little...

Big kevlar canoe repairs and new (to me) bias cut peel ply

It's really fast, even loaded with lots of gear. It's a bit strange to have your paddling partner that far away.

Big kevlar canoe repairs and new (to me) bias cut peel ply

It seems to release like the green stuff I've used in the past. I just did a big area on the bottom, an area of roughly 70 x 30 inches. It was still a little green and I really had to put my weight into it. Mark

    Printing maps?

I make my map sets using Caltopo for extended canoe and backpacking trips. Like others have said, I can place markers on the maps for water sources and any other points of interest along with notes etc. Caltopo also has an app for the phone, so the same thing is on your phone in case you want to...

Big kevlar canoe repairs and new (to me) bias cut peel ply

Hi Clint - If you know of a way to vacuum bag small areas it would be better/stronger since, as Jim said, you remove excess air and use the minimal amount of epoxy. Getting the new kevlar as tight as possible to the existing is the goal for maximum strength. I don't think I would waste the time...

Big kevlar canoe repairs and new (to me) bias cut peel ply

After a short cold snap here in Montana, I finally started repairs on an old Wenonah Minn 4 that has been in service on the Missouri River for 20+ years. Perhaps this barge has carried some of your gear if you've ever done a guided trip through the breaks? Over the years this wonderful boat has...

    Compression Sacks

I bought an REI compression sack a couple years ago to tame the size of my -25 Western Mountaineering Puma down bag. A few years back I bought a new lighter winter pack, 3.5 lbs. vs. my 8 lb Dana Designs Terraplane. The new pack didn't have quite as much room down at the bottom where the...

Testing New Gear - Bivy Sacks

I gave up on using a bivy long ago. My biggest problem is with the condensation that builds up between the bag and the sack, but it can be managed successfully. We used to use a vapor barrier with a bivy in the winter to keep the sleeping bag dry. For summer use, I did make a breathable bivy and...

    A Hash brown Dehydating video.

Very strange that some of you can't find these hash browns. All the grocery stores I've been in out west have them. They are usually located with all the other instant potatoes. The amount in the small pint sized cardboard container makes a good breakfast for 2. I add dried onions to the box...

    Canoe hauling

This is a 23' Wenonah MN4 on an older subaru, but I have aftermarket thule racks that I got for less than $100 used. If you plan to use your car for carrying canoes often I would get something better than the factory bars. I have carried larger and heavier canoes than this one on the stock...

Wiggy Bags or other sleeping bags?

An opposing opinion on Wiggys just because I'm feeling that way today. These are heavy and bulky synthetic bags that are somewhat inexpensive. I suppose they are probably just as warm as anything else in the same class. Lots of unsubstantiated marketing claims on the website bordering on...

    sanding insanity

I posted this before, but here is my latest/best solution for sanding the inside bilge area. I don't claim to have thought this up myself, I probably saw it on here somewhere. I used some of a minicell yoga block and hot glued it to an old 1/4 sheet sander. It's a bit messy because dust...

Wanted: Superior Expedition, Kruger Dreamcatcher or Kruger Sea Wind

A number of years ago, while packing up to leave camp, my friend slipped on some grass and fell with all his weight on a dry bag he had tucked under one arm. He cracked a bunch of ribs and could hardly breath, but he was able to paddle his Kruger on one side only all the way out from the south...

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

I've only ever carried a gun when I was actually hunting something, and that was many years ago. People carrying guns for protection generally make me nervous whether or not they're on my team. I live and play in grizzly country here in Montana and before that when I was growing up in Alaska...

Looking good Mike. Good job on finding good end caps for that canoe. What are you going to do about the sun faded hull?

    Socks for Christmas Again?

I only gave socks last year. Try grip6.com socks, made in Utah. They are merino grown and made in the rocky mountains and have the full lifetime warranty. I used the heck out of them this summer and they seem to be wearing well.
