I almost always hammock now but I do have a closed cell foam pad in it.

I had the guys at Sanborn make me what I call a half bend (6/7 degree) a few years back and I love it.

This rock face tells an almost 100 year story of the BWCA. It's not uncommon to see water and ice lines on the rocks in BWCA lakes but this one is quite different, as are the rocks all around Little Gabbro, Gabbro & Bald Eagle lakes. The current lines are 1-2 feet higher than the water level...

Mine was an aluminum rental from Ely,MN in 1965 to paddle into the BWCA with my Dad, which was before it was a designated wilderness. At that time they were still logging, most of what is now the BWCA was logged off.

Brice, Don't know why, probably a hold over from old logging days, but all portage's in northern MN are measured in rods.

I think it's used less now because the Forest Service blocked off the logging road that folks used to drag boats into Elbow on, pretty much only canoes now. That said, we might have just been lucky. Glad this site is back up and running.

I'm just happy I could finally sign in again but only on my laptop. I'm using chrome and t seems to work fine. On my andriod phone it lets me see everything like a guest, which is a big improvement from the last month or more but it won't let me sign in.

Alan, I've never done the Big Fork or the Little Fork, I'm guessing by water levels that I saw at this point this year they are too low. There is a lot to explore outside of the BWCA in NE MN. Looking at a fall trip to do some more. I am getting really annoyed with all the issues on this...

Five miles from the BWCA where on the day we went there were over 200 groups and probably over 1,000 people entering, here - not so much. Also, no permits, no fees and picnic tables at every campsite. Here's my favorite picture of the trip - the parking lot at our entry point! We saw NOBODY...

Jim, The ribs are wood but they are 1/16" veneer so not at all the structure on a traditional wood canvas and maybe no more than your strip inserts. I will add there is a fiberglass mat football on the floor. Yes, we used vinyl ester although now they use some of the newer poly resin.

Seems to me most of the hand lay ups of composite canoes have more layers than most manufactures use. For example, in the 150 or so Merrimacks I helped build in getting them up and running again we basically used 3 layers of the different fabrics totalling 16-18 oz. Currently I'm finishing up a...

Merrimack has been making them that way for years. I haven't had any issues with them coming loose.

I tend to take a lot of newbies to the BWCA who prefer (me too) not to be in the stern. Weight balancing usually isn't an issue even if the bow paddler out weights me.
