    Maine Moose Hunting Guide

Most of the moose hunts I have been involved with here in Maine (5), the shooters used 30.06 or .308 iirc.

How much do you learn about an area before tripping?

Before the internet I would mail away for maps and brochures of canoe areas I read about from books and magazines. I spent a lot of time in LaVerendrye, Quebec, solo, they have a nice master map and a series of individual circuit maps. These maps really built up my confidence and I always knew...

Why don't past owners (except Robin) contribute to this site anymore?

I have my own thoughts on this from my experience and conversations with Doug and Dave O but it’s best they be kept to myself. As far as McCrea, he was a very active member of the original Northeast Paddlers Message Board and Paddling.net, he did the same thing there as he did to Canoetripping...

What is your favorite tree and why?

I like cedar and ash for all the pleasure they have given me in this canoe life. Cedar for the planking and ribs of my canoes, ash for the gunnels, thwarts, seats, decks, and paddles. They both are easy to split and make fine campfires. I do like Tamarack for its beauty in the fall northern forest.

    Keels: Yeah or Nay?

I have owned a Chestnut Pal and a Chum which both came out of the factory with keels but I went keel-less when I replaced the canvas. I guess Chestnut considered them “cottage “ canoes, built for recreational purposes vs. the Prospectors and Cruisers which where used for more robust conditions...

    Canvas summer tent

I like canvas tents but I prefer the wall tent designs. That 10x14 looks pretty nice in the ad but I don’t know much about that style of tent. The ad says out of stock till late July. We had a similar canvas tent back in the day and it worked well and lasted a long time. You almost always have...

    WTS: Three Duluth Packs

Nice packs, that’s a great price for someone who wants to start fresh with canvas packs. I had one of those kitchen packs, is that a utensil pack above the kitchen pack, if so, that’s a good deal. Good luck with the sale.

An interview with Garrett Conover, woodsman, author, wilderness canoeist guide.

Here’s a nice story about the Conovers and Mick Fahey, https://newengland.com/travel/maine/once-more-down-the-river-yankee-classic/

An interview with Garrett Conover, woodsman, author, wilderness canoeist guide.

Marc-Andre Pauze recently interviewed Garrett Conover and published the interview on his quarterly internet publication (marcpauze.net to subscribe). Some of Garrett’s observations might raise some eyebrows here, give it a read. North Woods Ways Wilderness culture through traditional canoe...

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

I sold my 2023 Silverado and went back to my roots, my 5th squarebody (1983 Chevy k20) with my 16’ squarestern wood canvas canoe with a 2.5 Yamaha 4 stroke.

Canoe for solo tripping and fishing

Welcome, Rutstrum and Mason set me on tandems also. I paddle wood canvas canoes so I really have no experience with modern non wood canoes, but I have many days in 16’ tandem canoes solo. My first was a 16’ Chestnut Pal which I really liked, but then I found a 15’ Chestnut Chum which became my...

1st paddle (AKA a Paddle from Scrap?) plus a wood glue discussion

I have used titebond III on many canoe gunnel scarfs also and even some canoe paddle repairs, it’s worked well for me.

Loadout for Upcoming 30 Day Trip

Looks good, nice gear. No doubt you have this covered, In Canada, you need a 50 miter floating rope, a sound device, ie whistle, and a bailer.

Big Brook, paddle and pole trip, North Maine Woods

Jake Feener is the real deal, and I believe that was his wife with him. He has some pretty interesting videos on his YouTube channel, northern Maine bear and moose hunts that he guides, plus some racing. From second hand info, I’m told he is real nice guy.

Music for the drive to, during, or the drive back from canoe trips?

Well, for my road trip to northwest Ontario I downloaded a bunch of new music (mostly older country) from Pandora…unfortunately Pandora doesn’t work in Canada. So I sat in silence, but I did find a nice station in the Ottawa Valley that played 50’s country, a lot of it local talent. That was...

Non Resident Purchasing Ontario Fishing License

I recently tried to buy my non resident fishing license and non resident crown land camping permit on line but the site seemed to be having issues. Good thing, as the canoe camping part of the trip never happened. “Service Ontario” locations are pretty reliable, although I would not wait till...

Restoration of an early Chestnut Bobs Special

That’s a very nice looking finished product, Those new inwales are worth the effort, beautiful, and the new rib tips really stand out for a neat finished product. Your caning job on the seats is also very impressive. I remember the late Fitz paddling his Bobs at the WCHA Assembly, he leaned it...
