    Hi from Oregon

Welcome to the forum. Nothing like a winter canoe repair project! Half the fun of tripping is the anticipation...repairing the canoe, checking your camping gear, poring over maps, etc...

Solo 12 night Algonquin trip in September/October

Thanks again, Cousin Pete. Reading one of your earlier trip reports is what encouraged me to get out and do more solo tripping. Given the conclusion of this trip report, it's ironic. I did the same trip this summer at the end of July beginning of August, but used the water taxi on Opeongo as I...

Wilderness Artist in a wood canvas canoe

Looks like he's a great teacher, too. On his vimeo channel, there is a cute video of the history of his village, all done in cut-paper animation by his students. At the end are images of the students making the animation. Looks like a lot of fun. Love the sky blue paint job on the canoe, too...

What plans do you have for the bad times?

Switched to yellow tarp (thanks Harlan!) Always wear ditch kit (sol bivy bag, tinder, lighter, power bars in smallest OPsak, 300 lumen flashlight, knife) Added Quikclot to my first aid kit. Planning to upgrade first aid knowledge this winter. Itinerary, detailed map, phone numbers of park, etc...

    Lost paddler found

I know this thread has moved on to bigger issues of SAR billing, but this three day thing keeps rearing its head, and is bugging me. For example: Just for the record, only unreliable British tabloids reported him killing his dog on day three. From the local article in La Frontiere (the one I...

    Lost paddler found

Wow, i got sucked into this story today and did a lot of reading. I guess Gavia is right. There is still a lot we don't know, and we ought to give him the benefit of the doubt. He may have had a Spot for all we know. The article says some equipment was damaged, but didn't specify. As for why...

    Lost paddler found

No problem. It was fun translating. I refreshed some idioms I had forgotten. Other info from other articles in La Frontiere: When they found him, he was limping through three feet of snow, barefoot. He lost 90 lbs. His dog's name was Rocky. He killed him with a rock. Things I want to know...

    Lost paddler found

Brad's got the gist of it, but I'm bored so I'll translate the article that he provided from La Frontiere [Square brackets are my comments] Five tries, to save his skin Injured and starving, Marco Lavoie made five attempts to make his way back to civilization and save his own life. Having...

    Woodland Caribou P.P. - Photos

Darn. Can't view them on the iPad. :( Will check them out on the desktop later.

    We are back

Likewise. I'd kick in a few bucks by paypal if you can set that up.

Woo Hoo the site is back up!

I thought we might have lost a second website (after solotripping...) so I'm very happy to see this site resuscitated! Good work, admins.:D

    What's planned for the fall?

Haha. It is if you're from northwestern Ontario. Though when I was a kid we referred to it as "down east." The French River is our Mason-Dixon Line!

    What's planned for the fall?

I know what you mean...I grew up in Thunder Bay. Actually next week is too early for good colour down here in the south :-(

    What's planned for the fall?

Going back to Algonquin next week for 6 days. Got a boat rented, but no itinerary yet. Poring over my maps!

Algonquin central lakes 8 days July Aug 2013

Yeah, I reserved all the lakes for that trip. BTW Apparently they only book about 60% of the sites on any given lake to make room for windbound folks, etc... Next week I'm going to algonquin again, but I probably won't book ahead as it is a weekday trip in the fall. Saves the reservation fee.

Algonquin central lakes 8 days July Aug 2013

I'm just learning this stuff, too. I don't have a scanner, but I recently got an iPad and got some applications on sale recently from the App Store. I took a screen shot of the map section I needed. (On an iPad, by simultaneously pressing the contol button and the on-off switch). The resulting...

Algonquin central lakes 8 days July Aug 2013

Thanks for the high praise. I absolutely agree about the maps...am disappointed when reports don't have them. BTW a fellow traveller referred me to some excellent overlooked campsites (hidden gems). Out of respect, I altered the location of some of the campsites I used, to prevent overuse...

Algonquin central lakes 8 days July Aug 2013

If you mean protection from mice, chipmunks, etc. I get it. But if you mean protection from bears, I was under the impression that barrels are not bear-proof. Maybe I'm misinformed? I saw a lot of people using them in Algonquin, so I don't doubt their utility as storage. In the 90's my...

Algonquin central lakes 8 days July Aug 2013

Thanks for looking. I always double carry. I take my time, build in extra travel days for windbound situations, dawdle, etc. Usually on the water around 7:45 or 8 a.m. and setting up camp in the early afternoon, between 2 and 4 p.m. Generally five or so hours a day. Part of me says, "Do...

Algonquin central lakes 8 days July Aug 2013

I already posted this report on Algonquin Adventures website, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to link to it here, for anyone who is curious about that area. I've been getting into canoeing recently, slowly getting acquainted with Algonquin Park to start, with a plan to travel further afield...
