    Varnish

I have heard the praises of Epifanes. It seems to be the go to for this type of thing. Thanks also for the clarification of the "below the water line" statement. It seems kinda confusing to make a statement like that when the primary use is for boats though. Thanks everyone! Keep them coming...

    Varnish

Been doing some research on types and brands of varnish for coating my strip/epoxy canoe as I am coming to that point . I do have some experience with many types of finishes on wood, but am looking for suggestions of good quality varnish that you have had some success with. Thoughts? A lot of...

    Old Town OCTA

You make it look so easy. Great looking shape...the canoe I mean. Not the arse. Sorry, I'm more of a leg man myself.

    Hiawatha 15- Long term build

Thanks for the accolades guys. Nice to know fine work is still appreciated. :) In my earlier posts, I had indicated that I would be installing the seats to supports mounted to the inside of the hull. I wanted this for a couple of reasons… So that I could have them as low as I could. I don’t...

    Hiawatha 15- Long term build

It’s been a long winter, but with the spring finally taking hold, I’m back at it. My apologies to you all, I have actually been slowly working on bits and pieces since the snow disappeared. My computer went down though, so I wasn’t able to post. I really don’t like using my tablet, cause the...

    Jack's Special/ Chestnut Chum

I'll second the thought that we are glad to see you up and mobile. You made pretty short work of the yoke. Nice job. You give yourself too little credit for your woodworking skills. Looking forward to your progress! Momentum

    Abrasion Resistance in Epoxy

You guys are like the mad scientists of boat building. I love it. I love the fact that there are people like yourselves that will test and try new materials to help all of us out. I am no scientist but certainly like to learn about ways to protect my newly crafted canoe. Afterall, I am the one...

    Solo expedition build

I'll throw my hat in the ring here... Alan, what if you had a steel, or composite plate that hung from the gunwales that had a series of angled slots in it. I'm picturing 3 heights and a handful of fore and aft positions. The bracket that holds your actual seat could have captive bolts in it so...

    The perfect bag

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I have seen the Overboard brand of bags, and it appears as though they fit most, if not all my criteria. I'll look at them a little closer. The biggest problem with most dry bags, is that they tend to be a round long tube that seals at one end. Invariably the...

    The perfect bag

I’m on the hunt for my opinion of the perfect bag for canoeing. How hard could it be right? I certainly welcome all feedback and input. There has to be something out there that will do the trick. I have a bit of criteria that surrounds my decision, so maybe it’s hard to find because my criteria...

    Sticker Shock!

Mihun, I have a US mail box and travel there once a month to pick up food items purchased over there that we can't get here. We have lots of food allergies. If there is something you are looking for, I'd be happy to order it for you and get it across the border. Then all I would need to do is to...

    Solo expedition build

If I may, I'd like to make a suggestion for someone to try... What about using a plastic tube, like teflon, cutting a slit in it, and then epoxing it to the hull first. Then wrapping the CF tape or Kevlar over the top of it and down on the hull? Has anyone tried this? Does flexible tube or hose...

    Hiawatha 15- Long term build

Jim, It hasn't been in the water yet! As my build posts say, It has taken me this long to get to this point and it hasn't seen water, apart from my sweat from sanding :) I was told that it was a little tender in the water by Joan @ Bear Mountain Boats. I haven't installed my seats yet. They are...

    Virtual collaboration

I too, would like to thank, and commend all of you who have contributed. I'm one of those who "strip" but this being my first one is a great learning experience. I used to learn all of these tricks and tips while out in the bush. I'd come upon someone, we'd strike up a conversation and I would...

    Hiawatha 15- Long term build

Jim, Maybe you can help me with something... I chose this canoe based on what was written in the Canoecraft book so many years ago. Long before they had stability charts to help decide on a model. I understand that the shape was changed with a revision of the book. I found out that the original...

    Hiawatha 15- Long term build

Jim, Thanks for posting. Very shortly I am going to revive this thread to finish up the build. I shut it down for the winter because I don't have heat. Every day it gets a little warmer and I get a bit more antsy to get it out on the water. Keep watching, I'll be at it soon

    Solo expedition build

Still a little unsure on the material for the decks and float tanks but I'm leaning pretty heavily towards foam and carbon. But I don't want big black decks soaking up the heat so I'll probably paint them to match the hull. Maybe with a pair of black carbon pinstripes showing through down the...

What do you do with your tripping garbage?

Mike, I do like your barrel idea, but what about getting a small barrel that fits within your regular food barrel so that you don't have to carry an extra item? If it's water tight then you won't have to worry about leaking either. Just a thought?

Mihun, Here are some pics of the mahogany if you are interested. They aren't that good but it will give an idea anyways. Just let me know.

Mihun, Ok, so I have 2 pieces of material you may be interested in... both Mahogany ( I can't remember what kind, it's been that long that I have had it) One piece that is 1" x 12" x 8'-0" and one piece that is 1" x 8" x 8'-0". The thickness is a nominal 1" so it isn't quite and inch...
