5 days in Ocala National Forest

Doug, Why wait till next year, grab John and come see me now. It looks like you have plenty of winter left up there and the weather is great here. By the way you don't have to worry about snakes, the gators eat them. ;-). Kayak_Ken (in a canoe)

5 days in Ocala National Forest

Some good friends of mine from New Hampshire came down to get away from the cold and do some paddling this past week. We only did day trips but they covered some of the best places to paddle in the Ocala National Forest. Sunday afternoon on the lower part of Juniper Springs, Monday on the Silver...

    Learning the 17' Wenonah Advantage

I picked up one of these for portageing my Voyager. It is quick and easy to attach/remove and when you find the right balance point and have the shoulder supports adjusted to fit you it works really well. Kayak_Ken (in a canoe)

    Okefenokee question

Don't have to worry about the water being frozen and if your lucky the cold front should go away by then. If you want some company let me know. Kayak_Ken (in a canoe)

We-no-nah solo canoe - advice please

Erica, I have a We-no-nah Voyager. Picture a larger version of your canoe (17' 6") with a lowered seat. From what I understand the lowered seat makes a big difference in stability. I get down to the Ocala National Forest alot and paddle it on the Silver River and Juniper Springs about 6-8...

    Okefenokee question

I don't see why a pole wouldn't work. Many old pictures show a dougout canoe with a guy standing in it with a pole and a shotgun in it. Kayak_Ken (in a canoe)

    Florida Spots?

Rather than paying to put in at Alexander Springs I use the near by bridge that crosses the spring run. It is a short paddle up stream if you want to see the spring itself. Kayak_Ken (in a canoe)

    Florida Spots?

Yellowcanoe, I have a small cabin down in the Ocala National Forest that is about halfway between Silver River and Juniper Springs. If you you would like some company and help with running shuttles when you come down let me know. Kayak_Ken (in a canoe)

    Florida Spots?

Navalcanoe how long will you be in Mayport? I live about 45 minutes north of Mayport. I only have my solo canoe up here right now but we could probably rent one from MWR for a day trip or longer. Kayak_Ken (in a canoe)

How do you store your food waste trash at campsites?

Didn't realize we were talking about bears, thought we were talking about raccoons, squirrels, chipmonks and ants. If we are talking about bears I would try to hang it between two trees and hope for the best. After seeing how easy the black bears in the Ocala National Forest can climb trees I...

How do you store your food waste trash at campsites?

When a picnic table is at the campsite I lift the bench seat enough to slide the cooler under it then lower it on top of cooler. Had a cooler slide off my SOT one time, the lid opened and the ice, food and drinks spilled out. Now I usually have a strap around the cooler to keep everything in it...

How do you store your food waste trash at campsites?

Mike, my days as a hard core kayaker are in the past. Haven't been in my ww kayak in years and it's been awhile since I have used my sea touring kayak. I do use my SOT once and awhile though. I switched to a solo canoe a couple of years ago to make it easier to get in/out of the boat at camping...

How do you store your food waste trash at campsites?

After reading about blue barrels and other food barrel substitutes I was wondering how you store the food waste trash generated on a trip. Do you use the same methods of storing your food at campsites, ie away from camp hanging in a container or in a trash bag in the campsite or some other...

Juniper springs run us closed but section useable

Yes that is the takeout. I think from the Juniper Springs takeout (putin) to the boat ramp is about 8 miles. Saw 5 eagles and about 10 different kind of birds that I don't know the names of last time I went down it.
