Everyone takes a chainsaw with them, right?

There's a huge raft of blown down trees blocking the side stream that goes around Holeb Falls (on the Moose River Bow trip in Maine), making the portage much longer. This will be the third time we head up there with chainsaws, come-alongs, cables, chains, peaveys and anything else we can get...

    I'm allergic to WordPress

OK, I have a fabulous website at voodoocanoe.com. This began as a team effort between Doug D and I back when we co-authored our story about getting treed by a flood on the Pemmigewasset, an adventure that somehow cemented our love for paddling, instead of scaring us both away forever. Anyway...

Canned food v dehydrated & packed water

Perfectly good question. In the Everglades there are these critters called raccoons who will bite through anything but a metal can. They hate brackish water too. When we went we had nothing but disposable gallon jugs. We piled them all under one canoe and dug the gunwales down into the marl...

    No Tripping Heirs

    Not my cup of tea

Ha! A lot of votes for solo trips. Alas, my wife gives me a lot of freedom but does not want me going solo - despite the argument that my partners will probably be the ones to get me in trouble. Anyway, the choice to go solo should be from the outset, not halfway through a trip where we...

    Not my cup of tea

What do you think of planning a 30 day canoe trip, bring 32 days worth of lovingly dried and packaged food, then getting stuck with a couple of folks who want to paddle like crazy every day, never stopping to look at anything, no muckle-ups, nothing, just paddle all day every day. Then getting...

Why and Where do you pole?

Here's one for you. Carp and Ethan and me after we held a poling clinic for NFCT. Mostly it's Carp showing us all how it's done.

    27 Days remains my record.

Me and Doug did a 27 day trip through Maine about 20 years ago. I thought I'd be breaking that record this year but my 32 day trip became a 20 day trip. Trip report to come...

Permethrin, Picaridin & Light Colored Clothes: A Winning Combo

Just to verify, I can go for a walk with Doug and he will collect 100 ticks to my Zero. And I have plucked several off me this year. Looked for Picaridin at Dick's - they never heard of it.

    Pakboat Fire

Heading out in 2 days for a big trip. We test-assembled the one I will be in, it's a bit of work, but you do it once per trip. Day trip? Probably too much work. 32 days? Piece of cake. Funny, when I was looking on craigslist, I could only find 15 footers. 17 footers were not to be found...

    Evaluating Kevlar Repairs

You should see the Bell Mystic Doug sold me. Definitely don't need to lock that one up. But I still win races in it!

Permethrin, Picaridin & Light Colored Clothes: A Winning Combo

Well then. I'm leaving in 7 days for points far far north. Obviously I am in that "too late to mail order" phase. Is there a brick and mortar store where I can buy picaridin?

    Poling lessons in Venice

Note to self: research canoe rentals.

    Poling lessons in Venice

BTW Yellowcanoe, cool video on the actual technique.

    Poling lessons in Venice

Not exactly sure where, but in Venice for sure. I expect it will be way lame, geared for old tourists who have never held an oar or a paddle. But you never know, definitely worth trying.

    Poling lessons in Venice

Hey did you know Venetian gondolas are rowed, not poled? They are powered by a single oar. Where did we all get the same wrong notion? I blame Saturday morning cartoons. Anyway, looks like fun. I shall take a lesson next week.

    What Now?

I have a Pentax WG III. Waterproof, great image quality, works underwater. But the zoom is limited. The other thing I don't like is the optional remote. I read the reviews and everyone said it didn't work, and just thought it was a bunch of naysaying. I bought one for like $30 and it truly...

    What kind of speakers?

Haha. Just pushing buttons. I believe in the zero decibel style, so one song just rattles around in my head for a week. Usually the last one I heard in the shuttle vehicle. Hopefully not rap... "I started panickin' when a mannikin ate my bannock and I hit it with a mahogany log in Temagami...

    Receiving SPOT locations

Also, as a progress update, I got another email at 2:30 in the afternoon. They had crossed Allagash lake and gone down Allagash Stream to the falls at the pond outlet. Yet another favorite campsite. Dang! I'm jealous now.

    Receiving SPOT locations

I believe it really is Caucomgomac Stream, with a nasty feature called the horserace. It's a wall of rock, the current piles against it and takes a 90 degree turn to the left, then around the end of the wall and back to the original course. If you are headed upstream, you enjoy a pleasant...
