New Rhode Island Law Makes Wearing PFD Mandatory for All

The all or nothing thing with PFD's is starting to really annoy me! "Always" wear a PFD is part of the reason people don't wear a PFD. There are many good reason to wear a PFD and I usually do wear one but I choose when to and when not to. The place I paddle the most from June-September the...

School me on sit/hit-and-switch in a short solo

John Puakea does a great job explaining the catch.

School me on sit/hit-and-switch in a short solo

I kneel 95% of the time and 100% of my sit and switch or hit and switch. Bent shaft paddles for kneelers are best suited around 6 degrees not what the sitters use. Straight shafts work fine and I use straight shafts more often then my 6 degree. The catch is the most important part of the...

You want to take that tub.....where?

If I had a little bear fat I would rather take a birch bark canoe then a colemen. My repair kit is under and in the spruce tree and some ash from the fire. Colemen canoes are about the lowest level canoe I can imagine. Aluminum canoes and any number of old town or other polyethylene canoes...

Should tandem paddlers ever paddle on the same side?

Not sure what your saying here. Is it stereotypical to say there are a number of folks on the forum who are adverse to sit and switch? I didn't mean to offend and I do know some in person and others only from their posts. I paddle solo, tandem, and occasionally pole. I didn't mention kayak...

Should tandem paddlers ever paddle on the same side?

Bud light! I thought you would have cleaner water up there. ☺️ I suppose different strokes for different folks. It is not just you memaquay that has shunned the sit and switch. I suppose sit and switch might not be quite the same as a draw or crossbow draw etc. I like to paddle against...

    Mississippi Speed Record

Increase of 250 to 2150 per paddler. That is insane. 4000 bucks to do the Amazon race. That is a huge bar to cross for most folks. I am finacially better off then most folks and could afford to do these races but still find the opportunity cost way to high. That is a great way to destroy a...

Should tandem paddlers ever paddle on the same side?

To me the obvious answer is a draw stroke. I have noticed a theme on the forum overall that some folks don't like to sit and switch. From my perspective not utilizing sit and switch is like saying I don't back paddle or draw. It is a stroke in the quiver. My paddling life would be so...

You want to take that tub.....where?

I have paddled crappy canoes and excellent canoes. I enjoyed the location and experience as much as the next guy regardless of the craft I paddled. For thousands of years the North country was navigated by open birch bark canoes. The native folks circumnavigated Lake Superior crossed over to...

    Rodents

I can not believe how calm the moose was. It was just a small moose but plenty big to mess up who ever or what ever it wanted. Very lucky that everyone and the moose kept their cool.

Havoc uses a anticoagulant which I am sure is effective but my issue with these poisons is that the snakes, owls, hawks, cats , foxes, coyotes etc all love to ear mice and are also effected by the anticoagulant. My mouse prevention method is to own 10 cats. I have never found a single mouse...

    Green river trip in Utah

I would be shocked if there were campsites that are overgrown with Tamarisk with the volume of paddlers and rafters navigating that river. I do not miss the smell of those trees.

Which section do you plan to paddle. I worked for a season sampling fish in Desolation and Grey Canyons. That section was amazing but I am sure they are all a special place to paddle. Have a great paddle.

Poll: What is Your Opinion of Tilley Hats

I love my Tilley hat. The brim should not flip up in the wind if one uses the two straps correctly. They both go behind the head and one is pulled tight under the base of your skull. It should be good to at least 30 mph wind. For all of you concerned about looking like a dork I would advise...

How many pairs of footwear: in canoe vs. on portage vs. in camp?

I prefer to use my bare feet most of the year. Winter time I use thin synthetic sock under thin neoprene socks until about 20 F then I add wool socks over top and maybe toe warmers if my toes get cold. Portaging and in camp I usually just used a pair of hiking shoes. Offcourse with my method...

Why are wood canvas canoes so nice to paddle

I take back my cocksure statements. After I left the keyboard and started critiquing my own statement I realized I was talking out of my rear end. Though in hind sight I do not take it back only because of all of your excellent responses.
