Grand Tetons, String and Leigh Lakes

Jenny, String & Leigh are three superb little lakes for paddlin'. Its not uncommon to see rather large numbers of elk crossing the shallows of String Lake in the evening. I think you may have been looking at Leigh Canyon. Both Paintbrush and Leigh canyons come down into what I call the canyon...

    Northwest Passage Solo

Looking very nice. That hull design strikes me as a sweet paddle. I'll enjoy following this. That sounds like a good way to do those cheaters - especially the long boogers. Cheaters really helped (forced) me develop my low angle apron plane skills on my first build :)

Experience with Yakima Trailer for Canoe Transport

The SportsRig is definitely the better trailer. Its a very expensive trailer nowadays but I'd buy it again. It rides better and the bar spacing is better for long hauls/long boats. Does some pretty gnarly off road work, too. The Yakima is best suited for 16' boats or shorter in my opinion...

Experience with Yakima Trailer for Canoe Transport

I've used the Yakima and the Sportsrig trailers for years. Both very good. Pulled 'em around at 75 mph no worries. Haven't had wind troubles with tractor trailers anymore than the usual buffeting you get with your vehicle. In Wyoming I prefer to trailer due to high winds and 80 mph double...

    Canoeing knife?

An excellent knife that has withstood the test of time.

    Canoeing knife?

I'm a big fan of 5" fixed blade utility knives. Just seems to be the sweet spot for me. The BK2 is a nice knife but its a heavyweight at nearly a full pound. The thick blades that seem so popular of late are fine on large choppers but the shorter knives lack the swing to be a good chopper...

    Luci Light inflatable Solar Lantern

That looks like a nice device. I used this one last summer and found it very useful: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TF7LZ3K/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2JGBGSSSFQHE0&coliid=I3VWZL3X681NE&psc=1 I put it in the net at the top of my tent and it illuminates the 3 person shelter...

    Where is spring??

Three days of non-stop cold rain and now, of course, its starting to snow. Forecast calling for snow over the next 24 hours. My local river has been choked back to 500 cfs to facilitate a bridge repair project. Don't think I can even float my OT Pack in that kind of dribble. Drilled a...

    No BWCA trip this spring

Sorry to hear of your dog's troubles, Phil. I would do the same if it were my path. A fine lookin' pooch and I hope he gets more stable with the medical administration.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (UPI) -- A Massachusetts police department has a message for citizens: "Chasing bears through the woods drunk with a dull hatchet is strongly not advised." The North Adams Police Department said in a Facebook post the incident "really did happen" Monday and the hatchet man...

My "not a trip" trip report.

Looks like a nice time and a great place to be. I do a lot of base camping-day paddling during the stormy spring season. Gives me a options when the weather go to crap in the mountains. Sometimes I can move a dozen miles from one small lake to another to avoid a nasty thunderstorm. And...

Glad to not be out this weekend...

That system rolled across Wyoming yesterday. Most impressive thunder & lightning show followed with a short spell of hail. Spooky lookin' skies. A small tornado touched down a hundred miles or so southeast of my location and tore up a couple buildings. Springtime in the Rockies :)

    PFD avoidance issues

On my vests I roll up and tape the extra length of the straps with a couple wraps of high grade electrician's tape. Keeps things tidy but with the option of using the extra if needed.

    Week long tripping saw?

Exactly. And the dual taper of the blade is a nice design touch. Runs very smooth and clean.

    Week long tripping saw?

Silky saws are a very nice high quality folding blade saw. Available in a variety of sizes. They are a pull-style blade which is my preference, perhaps not for others. I have three of their saws and love 'em.

    Sand Bar Camping

That's an excellent idea, Mike. I've a couple areas where I camp in sandy conditions and a grass mat shall come along on the next one. I use body wipes on extended trips to groom myself before I turn in each night. Keeps the sweat and bug juice out of my bag and such. Before relegating the...
