If you could have only two canoes. . . .

For my wife and I we have the perfect canoes: two Kruger Sea Winds and two Hornbeck Classic 13s. The Krugers are the go tos for camping, long paddles, sailing (BSD rigs), and just a good day on the water. The Hornbecks are wonderful for exploing all those little blue dots on the topo maps.

    Bivy Sacks

" When I replaced my winter bag I got one with a goretex shell and got rid of the bivy. Much better!" Amen the that. I did the same thing.

    Bivy Sacks

I have a high end breathable fabric bivy. It generally sucks. Unless I am in low humidity conditions (and then why be in a bivy?) I get condensation inside, which wets the sleeping bag or my sleeping clothes.

    Rideau Canal, Canada

Looks like all the stars are aligning for a thru paddle of the Rideau canal in Ontario next summer. Anyone else out there that has done this? Trip report or advice? Also looking for end to end shuttle options other than the one I have found. Thanks in advance.

    Improved Potomac River Paddle-In Campsites

Yep, god to see. Although registering for these will be problematic. I was told by the rangers at Newtowne that those would only be reservable by sending them an email. Wonder how many emails that will take.... with the exception of the Charles county site, the paddle in campsites in the...

    Tarp for Hennessey Hammock?

I have a hennesy that Inhave campedout of for years. Yes, the standard tarp is too small unless you are very good in your setup and site selection. I have used a siknylon equinox tarp 8x10 and it works well for most conditions. Just make sure you align the short sides of the tarp with the...

    Live aboard motor canoe project

"Watertribe and other adventure racers in Sea Wind decked expedition canoes use some combination of bug screens and rain flies connected around the cockpit coming and sleep in their boats. I have seen photos of Sea Winds done that way in cunning fashion." I built a cockpit double wall tent for...

Favorite east coast canoe trips? Help a Newbie out.

Try the Cashie river in NC. Camping on platforms in nice wooded swamps. Roanoke river has similair, but I have not done that yet. No shuttle needed for the Cashie. Very hard to beat a week of boat camping along the Suwanee from the headwaters down to at least Ivy Park.

    Mallow's Bay, MD

No paddling or ghost ship fleet at bloodsworth - unless you are volunteering to be target practice. Very active range. There is a mothballed cargo and tanker fleet on the lower James. I find Mallows overrated and crowded. But that access point is one of few on that section of the Potomac...

    Swamp paddling recommendations

In Virginia, consider parts of the Pamunkey, around White Oak landing and the side creeks, plus Cumberland Marsh Matural Area is accessible from there. Great in the fall for birding. Parts of the Mattaponi are nice also. I often stay at the tent section of Rainbow Acres campground on the...

    Swamp paddling recommendations

Congaree National Park was very nice - Cedar creek was a nice paddle, but bring s boat you don't mind portaging around strainers. It is doable as an out and back at low current times. The trees are amazing.

    Big Waves and Pumps

I paddle a Seawind. I use an electric bilge pump. It is a self contained unit running on D cells. Has worked for several years so far. Made by Atkins.

10-day forecast: tripper's friend or foe?

Yep. When I was working it eas "hell with the westher I am going...". Now, so far this year everytime I decided not to go because of the predicted weather even two days out I have ended up at home during glorious weather. No more of that next year!

Poll: How often do you switch sides?

I paddle a Seawind. About 50 strokes to the side, then switch, just to keep the muscles evenly excercised.

    Electrical Power in the Field

Here is what I do. I have about the same fan. Normally runs on 4 D batteries. Bought the DC cigarette lighter adapter. Bought a female adaptor, which I wired to plug into an AGM rechargeable battery (10,000 mah, from Cabelas, about 4x2x8 inches). Runs the fan for at least 4 nights on high...

New to tracking on my SPOT

I used the old model SPOT. The tracking is turned on or off using the button with the little feet logo. I almost never use tracking as it eats up batteries. My protocol is to turn on the device when I launch for the day. At that time I send the "I am ok" message. I leave the unit on while...
