For those of us who have been around for a while, the evolution (devolution?) of myccr has been an interesting spectacle. It was the very first canoe forum I joined, I think around 1999, and it was a very exciting time for me. I learned lots about new equipment options, met many excellent people, and had a few "interesting" canoe trips that resulted from those contacts.
The original owner, Richard Munn, was very helpful for our school club, I used to order box loads of freeze dried food from him for our 14 days trips. Richard kind of went AWOL after a while, and the board descended into an unmoderated nightmare. A few choice oppositional type characters continuously kept people in internet angst with their fractious posts, and for a while, it looked like myccr was headed for the dust bin.
I can't remember when it happened, but suddenly there was a new sheriff in town, who took moderation very seriously. Myccr went for the Wild West to Sunday School manners overnight. I knew that moderation was needed, but it became so strict that I eventually left. Someone had posted one of those endless Algonquin Park threads about people stealing their prebooked campsites. The usual reactions were given, like "my goodness, I hope you reported them to the park officials". I suggested that they should have let their inner pirate out, and raided the offending campers late at night, drinking all their booze and impregnating their women and then silently sneaking off in the sunrise. I thought it was pretty funny, but my post was immediately removed and I got a PM from the moderator condemning me for promoting "Rape Culture" and a bunch of other ultra PC crap.
Fortunately, around the same time, or maybe a year or two after, I found this site. I think I was steered here from the old wintertrekking site, and the solo canoe site that was associated from it. I found out that folks could still take a joke here, and it has been a fun ride since. The early days with Robin at the helm hold some of my most cherished memories, Rippy's knife contest, the Plaid Prancer episodes, the many first rate best ever trip reports. We are fortunate that Glenn had the foresight to update the software and keep the place going. In my opinion, it is the best canoe forum on the web.
I still pop by myccr about once every three months or so, sometimes I will receive a PM from someone looking for info on one of our canoe routes, but the ancient quirky software makes things like PM's difficult, and the whole internet experience is sub standard. It's unfortunate as there is a wealth of info on that site, it's just really hard to access.
Anyway, enough rambling, I hope they solve their issues, and maybe take this as an indicator that they need to upgrade in order to remain viable.
