If you could take one boat on a Western road trip...

Alan, I wouldn't bother bringing a canoe on a trip like you describe. From my experience, you'll wish you didn't have the boat more than wish you did in the end. When you go for day hikes, bike rides or a backpacking trip somewhere what will you do with the boat? I don't like worrying about...

Misc Ramblings From the 'ole Miss(inaibi)

I read through the initial post, but what river are you talking about here? You don't say. Also, I can't tell why you needed to be extracted. Was the water too high? or for some other reason? Mark

    Campfire Pizza

I use a tortilla shell for crust, then drop one on top so it can be flipped in the pan. Sort of a quesadilla/pizza hybrid. It all tastes the same. Mark

    Final curing of epoxy boats

Souris River does some kind of heat curing of their hulls after layup. They are one of the few commercial builders that use epoxy resin for their. Mark

    First build, sanding issues...

Hi Jeff. Unfortunately the sanding marks will probably be visible under close inspection. If you wet the area and see them, then that's what you'll see when epoxied. If I were you, I would only focus on trying to minimize the scratches on the sides of the canoe and ignore the ones on the bottom...

    What's out West?

The Yellowstone front country is already a solid line of traffic during most of the open season. Can you imagine the cluster $&% it would create if the rivers were opened to boating? Not to mention the resource damage, garbage etc. Sure, I would love to paddle the Yellowstone River through...

    Skegs on canoes?

From my experience with a skegged kayak, a skeg mostly helps in the downwind direction, maybe a little with a broadside wind to reduce weathercocking but that would really depends on the canoe/kayak design. If you paddle primarily on large lakes, the skeg can help keep the boat from broaching in...

    Keen Men's Arroyo II

I am a fan of sandals for canoe tripping. For those interested in trying sandals, this Teva Omnium sandal has served me well for years. I am now on my third pair. The toe is pretty much closed until just beyond the ball of the foot. You can, on occasion, get stuff underneath the foot but it...

    Wood Glue versus Epoxy

Thanks, this sounds good. I see it's available at Canadian Tire. I'll grab some on my next trip north😉.

    Wood Glue versus Epoxy

I have used TB III on all my canoe builds, paddles etc. and never had any issues. It has the longest open time and most importantly is rated for use at the lowest temperature of all 3, which means I don't have to heat up the shop as much. I am pretty good about using the right amount of glue, so...

    Repairing ZRE Carbon Paddle Blades

I wish you had photographed the broken blade. It still isn’t exactly clear to me why the mould was necessary. Also, how did you break the paddles? I assume hitting a rock. My non ps zre paddle seems amazingly strong. I often paddle upstream, hitting rocks has knocked the paddle out of my hands...
