Mad River made the 17' Revelation in RX which was essentially a scaled up version of the Explorer. I had one of these that now lives at my neighbors house. Its a very maneuverable beast of a canoe that can hold a ton. I see them all the time, used, in any condition but almost always less than...
That's a coincidence, I have been mapping out a route in that area lately, Flindt River is on the route. I can't say that I've thought about rock climbing there though.

Agreed Jim, this guys lack of self and situational awareness should encourage us to realize we all have blind spots. This goes for everything in life, not just canoeing.

Last spring I was out 3 nights paddling Gates of the Mountains on the Missouri River and had done a few of the hikes accessible by water. I knew it was tick season and pulled many dozen off me over a couple days. In the tent and even after I got home I pulled a few off. Days later I had some...
I use polyester seatbelt webbing, 2" wide. Polyester is more UV resistant and doesn't stretch when wet compared to nylon webbing. In the past I haven't been able to find polyester webbing in anything narrower. I've never used polypropylene webbing, but I think it's the type of ribbed webbing you...
Beautiful canoe and definitely priced to sell. You're not planning any trips out west are you Robin? Is this one that you replaced the inwales in the past?

Last August I stopped in at CRCO to talk to Ric and pick up a couple maps. I didn't realize he had one foot out the door. I think he's been there, doing that for almost 50 years. Indeed there is a surprising amount of country up there to explore. There's a core area of well travelled routes with...
I'll just comment that I would definitely use s-glass on the exterior for abrasion resistance. I agree that using it on the interior would increase hull stiffness by some amount, not sure how much. On my last 4 boats I used 4 oz e-glass inside and out plus an additional layer of 4oz s-glass on...
I have fixed a few of these and the cold crack thing isn't a big deal, at least to me as a buyer. To the seller it means get rid of it while i still can. These cold cracks seem minimal, so the repair will be easy. I would offer him a fair price with the cost of your time and materials factored...
I agree with all that. The fact that nick can mess with a video camera, narrate an instruction video, teach a student and glass the inside of a boat all at the same time is impressive. He’s one of the few experts in a sea of posers on any subject on YouTube.

That ratio is probably about right. Unless someone works in the natural sciences, there's no reason or ability for them to intelligently argue or discuss the science. The barrier of entry to that conversation is a specialized education in the field, knowledge of causal relationships...
I have no interest in arguing or comparing credentials, or the new assertions, but you didn't answer the question. I'll try again. What convinced you that "neglect" of the forest has led to large catastrophic fires (a million acres or more??).
I started laying inside glass horizontal on my second canoe and did all the rest like Nick does in this video. To me, it takes away a lot of the stress. I now do the wedge at the ends first and let them set up before continuing.
Small batches of epoxy is another great tip. Keeps from getting...
