I'm planning an extended trip and I tend to read a lot while tripping. My reader has plenty of books, but I'm concerned about running out of juice and having to talk to myself too much (can't be healthy). Anyone used a solar charger for a mini USB device?

FYI, I took my Kindle (w/backlight) on a 43 day trip, reading probably a half hour each evening. I recharged once with a power pack towards the end of the trip. It still had juice, but I recharged it anyway as I had not used the power pack for anything else, and figured "why not".

I agree with dogbrain, unless you spend the money for high quality panels the output will be feeble. Perhaps more important, you will need some sort of power bank to store the output. Connecting a solar panel directly to a device will not produce a positive experience unless you are base camping in the desert.

Since you'll need a power bank the panel becomes superfluous unless your trip is REALLY extended (as in months).

I did a 50 day trip with 40,000mah in 3 power banks, charging multiple devices (InReach, GoPro, still camera, music player)

A lot heavier?
There are a lot of variables. Mostly, how much power do you need? and what weight penalty (if there even is one) are you willing to trade for the inconvenience of dealing with solar. I would calculate how many hours of reading I would realistically do on a trip, then make a ballpark estimate of how many hours in one charge of the device, then determine the amp-hour rating of the devices battery. Multiply the rating by the number of charges to get a ballpark estimate of the size battery pack you'll need. You might be able to get away with a small one. You may already know how to calculate all that, so sorry if you do.

FYI, for my camera I just carry spare batteries. Also, I seem to bring a book on every 2 or 3 week trip and struggle to read even 20 pages. Travelling, fishing, camp chores and cooking take up all the time. I don't seem to have a moment to spare for some reason when I'm out on a trip.

First week I’m similarly occupied, but as my systems kick in and I get better at routines, I am able to enjoy a few hours per day. Then, there’s always foul weather days, and insomniac nights.
