There is a stretch of river that I've been doing almost every year for the last several years.
Every year it is different. I mean, like it's a whole different river.
There are numerous riffles with some being close to what you might call a rapid. I would.
Where the biggest riffles are and how big changes from year to year, even if the flow is about the same.
I suppose that's a good thing. Keeps it interesting.

The fascination of moving water is enough by itself, but the difference flow makes for a different trip.
In 2022 on the Klamath River, California's second largest river, after a big snow melt year we had all we could handle and a little more.
We were in drift boats and had run the river 2x before on harder sections. We chose an easier section because of the really high flows. 10,000 cfs is a lot of water when it has gradient. We took one look at the Scott River confluence adding another 5,000 cfs and pulled off the river. It was the last time I have run any rivers. Now we may be doing a commercial trip and let someone else do the work.

I used to paddle the same stretch of river 3-5 times per week. I knew it so well that if I was paddling in the dark without a moon I could avoid obstacles I couldn't see. But I still noticed regular changes. Changes due to water level. Changes due to season. Changes due to floods. Changes due to a tree falling in the river. Changes due to new channels being cut. And just the normal changes that come from a river doing river things.

I know lakes change too but rivers change quicker and I find them much more interesting.
