Safest places to canoe in the USA after a nuclear war

I used to think if we left home for NW WI when things got dicey, we’d be able to head to the border and escape north. I think we went over this some time back here.

More recently, I asked a relative and former National Security Council member who worked the Sit Room under W. He’s pretty skeptical about surviving a full out exchange. This guy worked for state and once had a 12 man security team assigned to him during his tenure in Latin America. He’s now in urban Cincinnati. I asked if he had a go bag and his response was “go where?” Borders would quickly close, highways jam and small towns in non-target areas would eventually receive fallout. If I had a young family I might still have a go bag and a plan, but I don’t think canoe destinations would be good. You would need options and speed, and seasons would be factors for survival. Rockies are about the best bet for our immediate survival, but that means passing through extensive target zones pre-strike. Meh, we’ll just have steaks and play with the dogs once things look imminent. This area will be fried, so maybe it will be quick.
 
kinda' hard to outrun a supersonic missile in a canoe, so I'm just gonna' sit back and watch the fireworks
 
It’s time to move on from this topic and get back what we usually discuss here. Me, I am looking forward to meeting up with many of my paddling buddies at Canoecopia next month. We’ll drink too much beer and retell our exaggerated stories while planning this year’s trips.

I didn't take that shot and should have mentioned it in my post. I thought it was a great photo (and have a Grasse River canoe) so I saved it. As far as the cat in a canoe with a pfd, I have a canoeing friend with a cat that is more like a dog than a typical cat - it goes for walks on a leash wearing a harness similar to a pfd - and I'm sure he could easily bring along his cat in a canoe. I'll have to ask...

If you live any where neare a usuable airfield and runway, civilian or (especially) military, it and its environs are a target for a capable enemy. Particulary including several miles off the end of the standard use takeoff runway in the miitary nuke weapon carrying case. Same for government and civilian military contractor office buildings or research faciliities.
 
That cat in the canoe really is a great picture. (personally, I'd rather ponder the canoe cat than my possible evaporation. Hope you understand)

Depending on the feline; INTO the canoe & stay might be pretty easy. The feline terrorists that my kids left here when they got their own places all hate water enough that they'd stay in if tossed in during a wet-foot launch beyond leaping distance of the shore. Catching them again might prove tricky.

As for the pfd: with any of these, you'd lose blood. Probably lots of blood and still not get them pfd'd (not to worry though, if fat floats they're already plenty buoyant)
 
I have studied the nuclear fallout from testing at Nellis AFB over the years.
This map is a lot of wishful thinking. Over time the whole country will be contaminated.
Small test shots at Nellis have created maximum fallout in places in New York State.
The nuclear materials that are released have long half lives. The fallout will be entrained in the Earth's circulation and reach other continents.
The map just shows the short term effects.

No, I meant those turnip things, often covered in gravy. To be fair, Atikokan and International Falls probably aren’t the best Canada has to offer. Montreal was pretty good.

Still, tell me a full on attack is coming and I’m going for tacos al pastor.

OK. I'm unsure what you're referring to. "pasties" in my recollection are usually associated with strippers (not the kind usually discussed here) and I would not expect the cuisine to be the major attraction in such establishments.

I'm certainly no expert but I'd take poutine (fries w/ cheese & brown gravy but easier to type as "poutine") over burritos. (At least most days).
 
IMG_1156.jpegHard to believe you’ve never heard of pasties. Pronounced “pass-tees”. The lumberjacks from Finnland or somewhere carried them in their shirt pockets for lunch. Filled with turnips and meat. The cafes cover them with gravy because they are typically dry as a camel’s hump. They’ll keep you alive, but you’d have to eat them with a side of plutonium 239 cause there’s nearly as many targets in Canada as the U.S. And who’d want to nuke Mexico anyway (besides possibly factions within the U.S.)? Best food in the western hemisphere, and their army poses no threat to anyone…except maybe its own citizens who might cross the cartels. Certainly no international threat. Potential post-strike Invaders would certainly want to preserve the roast pig from a ground oven, smothered with vegetables and sauce and served with fresh, warm tortillas among music and dancing hosts of pretty senoritas and laughing children. Naw, south is the smart direction to paddle.

ok, I'm in Ontario, and never even had a pastie with turnup in it, The scottish- canadian ones I've had are always beef, potato, sometimes peas, and a VERY thick gravy to glue it all together.
don't forget though, canada Is home to Poutine, Nanaimo bars, Hawaiian pizza, and pemmican- whoever thought ground bear and blueberries would go together was GENIUS...
