Mourning Drowned Rivers

Work has started on the removal of the Gorge Dam on our wonderful Cuyahoga river in northeast Ohio. Tentative schedule for completion is 2026. Removing the dam will reveal, ”The Big Falls” and open up a 2 1/2 mile stretch of whitewater not seen for more than 100 years. Can’t wait to see the result!

The Elhwa River in Washington is an excellent case study. The sediment was cleared much faster than hydrologist estimates. The redd beds became functional within two years and the river produced salmon smolts. The spit at the end of the river mouth is growing again. A big success story.

thanks for the references. I have one but can’t remember it. Those early environmental efforts and leaders are fascinating. Martin Litton is a hero.
