Hey, I am wondering if anyone has had any luck using side mount motor bracket effectively. I have an Old Town motor bracket, a 2.5 HP Mercury and I am using them on my Old Town 17 HW Sponson. The problem is once I get above half throttle, water pours into the canoe. This happens because the shaft of the outboard is exposed. I have tried moving the motor to different locations and have been attempting to construct a water deflector or some sort. No luck so far.

I have two square stern canoes, but I think it would be nice to motor out to a location, set up camp, ditch the motor and paddle a proper canoe.

Thanks!

I've used side mounts extensively in the past and yes, some motors will throw spray into the canoe. I've used a piece of rubber matting as a spray shield on one of my canoes.

I find my 2hp Honda does that if mounted on the left side of my Scott Echo, but not on the right because of the propwash hitting the hull, moving the motor a couple of inches farther out helps too.
