Has a bear ever gotten your food?

I have some friends that are proud of the claw marks on their equipment. I am proud of the fact that my equipment has none.

I remember waking up one morning in Alaska at the foot of "The Golden Stairs" at Sheep Camp on the Chilkoot Trail. A guy told me that the morning before, a black bear had opened a nylon tent with his claws at 0900 in broad daylight and entered the tent where a lady was rolling up her sleeping bag. She was shaken but unharmed by the visitor. She had one granola bar in her pack, which was in the tent with her.

I love horseshoe crabs! This brings back memories of my father, who was no outdoorsman, trying to teach me the wonderful peculiarities of life on earth! Look, Susie!

Actually, the boy scout camp I mentioned was Camp Sabattis on Lows Lake in the ADKs. I have never seen so many bears. They walked through the camp many times. We saw a mother and cubs which caused a visit from an officer who checked them out and pronounced them safe. Those cubs sure were cute!
