After I forgot to bring a whoopie sling on my recent trip because I only have two sets for three hammocks I decided to make a third one. As with about anything, the right tool makes the job easy. The set of three fids I already had were all too big for the 7/64" Amsteel rope. On the interweb, I found the tip about using knitting needles. The size 10.5 (6.5 mm) was the ticket for the job. With a hacksaw I cut the needle at an angle and deburred the cut with a Fremel tool (a Harbor Freight Dremel® knock-off.) An angle grinder with cut-off disk, drill, file, and Fremel also came in handy for making the whoopie hook. (Don't look too closely, the workmanship is atrocious.)

As you know, knitting needles come in pairs. I'd be happy to send the extra one to a fellow DIYer on a pass-it-forward basis.
